What are CSIR Research Fellowships?
To polish up the talent of young candidates, the EMR Division under HRD group of CSIR provides CSIR Research Fellowships and Associateships.
In accordance with the CSIR Fellowships rules, the candidates are provided the training in methods of research in various fields of Science & Technology and Medical Sciences under the expert guidance of faculty members or scientists working in University Departments of any of the CSIR Laboratories.
Who is eligible for CSIR JRF Scholarships?
To exploit the JRF Scholarships offered by CSIR, candidates need to fulfill the following eligibility criteria –
The candidate should be the citizen of India.
The candidates holding any of the following degrees with at least 55% marks (General and OBC) or 50% marks (ST/SC/PWD) will be eligible for the reward of Junior Research Fellowship offered by CSIR.
BS-4 Years Program
BE or B. Tech
Pharma
MBBS
Integrated BS-MS/M.Sc.
Equivalent degree/BSc (Hons)
The candidates need to qualify the Joint CSIR UGC NET Exam to avail the CSIR Fellowships.
Candidates with bachelor’s degree, whether Science, engineering or any other discipline, will be eligible for fellowship only after getting registered/enrolled for PhD/integrated Ph.D. Program within the validity period of two years.
Any candidate enrolled for M.Sc. or having completed 10+2+3 years of the above qualifying examination are also eligible to apply under the Result Awaited (RA) category.
The candidates should not exceed the age limit of 28 years otherwise; they will not be permitted to appear in CSIR NET Exam.

Important Note Regarding Fellowship Termination:
CSIR Junior Research Fellows should register for PhD within a period of two years from the date of joining their fellowship, failing which the fellowship may be terminated.
In exceptional circumstances, CSIR may consider giving the extension for an additional period of one year.
During the extended period, the Junior Research Fellowship will, however, not be upgraded to Senior Research Fellowship.
If at the end of the 3rd year also, the fellow is not registered for PhD, the fellowship will be terminated.
The Fellowship shall stand terminated from the date of PhD viva-voce or from the date the Fellow resigns and his/her resignation has been accepted by CSIR or on completion of tenure.
The fellowship may also be terminated if the institution where it is tenable refuses to provide facilities to the fellow on disciplinary grounds and so informs CSIR.

CSIR NET Exam is conducted for 5 Subjects –

Chemical Sciences
Earth Sciences
Physical Sciences
Mathematical Sciences.

Which Institutes offer the CSIR Fellowships or Associateships?
The CSIR Fellowships/Associateships are tenable in any of the below –
Universities
IITs
Post-Graduate Colleges
Government Research Establishments
CSIR Research Laboratories
R&D Establishments of Recognized Public or Private Sector
Industrial Firms and Other Recognized Institutions.
However, CSIR reserves the right to determine the place best suited to provide necessary facilities in the science and technology field in which the awardee is to specialize.

What is the amount and duration of CSIR NET Scholarships?
As per the CSIR guidelines, the JRF selected candidate through CSIR-UGC National Eligibility Test (NET) will receive the stipend of INR 25000 per month for the period of two years.
In addition, annual contingent grant of INR 20,000 per fellow will be provided to the University / Institution.
The guidelines for utilization of contingent grant are given below –
On Completion of two years as JRF and if the fellow is registered for PhD, the fellowship will be upgraded to SRF (NET).
The Stipend will also increase to INR 28,000 per month after 2 years.
The promotion from JRF to SRF will be done only on the basis of the assessment of Fellows’ research progress and achievements through the interview by an Expert Committee.
The Expert Committee will consist of the Guide, Head of the Department and External Member from outside the University who is an expert in the relevant field and not below the rank of Professor/ Associate Professor.
Note: If the Assessment Committee finds JRF inappropriate in his/her Research Tasks, then the JRF can be terminated from his position.
The progress of research work of JRF will be assessed by duly constituted three member’s assessment committee again at the end of 3rd year for such upgradation.
This shall form an important quantitative and qualitative criterion for judging the progress made by the candidate.
If the work of JRF is still not found satisfactory for upgradation by the Committee or did not register for PhD, the fellowship will be terminated.
Extension of tenure for the 4th year of SRF (NET) will be based on the progress report and recommendation of the guide.
The 5th year extension as SRF(NET) is permissible on the recommendation of a three-member assessment Committee and progress report.
The total tenure as JRF plus SRF(NET) will not exceed five years.
The award of CSIR Fellowship / Associateships is for fixed tenure and does not imply any assurance or guarantee for subsequent employment by CSIR to the beneficiary. The authority to award / terminate vests with CSIR.
The awardee shall not lay claim to permanent absorption in CSIR, after the expiry of Fellowship / Associateship.

The Exam is conducted twice a year, usually in the months of June and December. The candidates who aspire CSIR, need to score more than the CSIR NET cutoff marks in all the three parts of the question paper – Part A, Part B and Part C.
