The Blues really need to start putting some distance between them and the relegation zone

Preview

Everton are going into the week that is going to determine their Premier League future in pretty rough shape after a heavy thrashing away at Chelsea on Monday night. Sean Dyche in some respects seems to have lost the players’ faith, and even the most devout of his fans are starting to question his approach as the Blues stumble towards the end of the season.

The Toffees are still in control of their own destiny, but every game that goes by with another frustrating result, they are allowing other clubs to better their own stakes at Everton’s expense. Today they take on Nottingham Forest who have also felt the sharp blade of the Premier League’s PSR punishment axe this season, and the pair are trying to stay just ahead of Luton Town who are desperately trying to get out of the drop zone themselves.

Nottingham Forest sacked long-time manager Steve Cooper after a rough run towards the end of last year, and though they have improved on the attacking front in recent weeks under Nuno Espirito Santo, they remain a point behind the Toffees having played a game more.

A win here for the Blues might in many respects ensure their safety even though mathematically that might remain an open affair right until the last weekend of the season, with the league announcing that the results of the Toffees’ appealing their new two-point deduction would be announced before that trip to the Emirates.

Last Meeting

The Blues were on a roll racking up wins in November and December before the wheels fell off their campaign. Before that happened though, they did pick up a 1-0 win away at the City Ground against Forest in early December, with Dwight McNeil scoring the winner and then mysteriously disappearing for the remainder of the season, or that’s what it feels like.

That win came the day after the Blues had been hit with a ten-point deduction for PSR violations, with Everton sitting right at the bottom of the table and kickstarted a clamber towards safety that got offroaded the very next month.
