Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Communications

The Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications paradigm, a novel automated exchange of data among autonomous devices without human intervention, is crucial for the networked society and is shaping the evolution of the future Internet and the Internet of Things (IoT) – the next step in increasing the ubiquity of the Internet, by connecting inanimate objects after connecting people anytime and everywhere.

The key enablers of M2M applications are cloud computing, which provides unlimited computing capabilities, middleware such as ODIN and next-generation wireless technologies (e.g., 5G technology and heterogeneous networks), which enhance performance and efficiency of wireless networks.

Improving parking

However, cities will also need to accommodate those that either need to travel in cars or who don’t want to travel on public transport. For these citizens, having effective parking options is essential. Perhaps surprisingly, some 30% of traffic in cities is caused by people looking for a parking place.

Some companies have developed a system that uses sensors in the street and infrastructure around the city to detect where parking is available and makes this information available for drivers. This can be combined with public transport to create hubs with parking to get drivers out of their cars.

A nice side benefit of smart infrastructure is that the sensors that have been installed for one application can be also be used for another.

ODIN can support API’s providing primitive procedures for machines authentication, resources discovery, applications registration, containers management, synchronous and asynchronous communications, access rights authorization, groups organisation, and re-targeting.

Building the business model

Because cities are very complex environments, the business model could be anything from using Internet access as a differentiator for a long-distance coach operator – who could charge travelers. Alternatively the cost could be borne by the city as a way to encourage people onto public transport.

Cities will play a central role in the world’s future growth, but traffic congestion and energy use could limit their potential. This is where smart cities and intelligent transport systems could help.

Smart City Apps

Since there will be so many connected parts of cities, it won’t be unusual to see apps dedicated to entire cities. City guides will now be available in apps, offering information about museums, parks, landmarks, restaurants, traffic data and more. Many cities now offer apps that help citizens and tourists improve their experience in the cities.

ODIN is capable interacting with available city data and enhancing reservation activity and booking operations for companies using ODIN.

ODIN M2M API’s

We are able to produce a number of APIs that enable conductivity to a wide range of digital and electro mechanical devices. Ranging from ticketing kiosks, credit card units, boarding gates, touchscreen kiosks, Marina dock gates and many other devices and systems necessary for advanced reservation, ticketing and boarding solutions.

Business customers rely on IMS ODIN Reservation technology M2M solutions for:

• Ability to connect a client’s customer reservation and ticketing service through kiosks and other M2M devices

• Remote monitoring, tracking and analysis of reservations, ticketing and boarding processes

• Credit card and scanner transaction processing

• Reliable, secure connectivity and back-up access across a clients wireless networks (GPRS/EDGE, HSPA and LTE) and VPNs

• Business applications on mobile devices

• Custom iPad apps for the mobile workforce

• Connections to most information and entertainment ticketing devices

• Able to connect to clients chosen near-field communications or NFC-enabled mobile phones for rail or bus ticket.

Machine-to-machine (M2M) is a technology that is changing every sector of our economy, providing greater visibility to critical data and streamlining and automating the operations of businesses. Benefits includes new revenue opportunities and improved productivity, but also better customer service and faster response times.

Leveraging this technology ODIN can perform as a distributed, multi-master reservation and ticketing system with no single point of failure.  Businesses can maximize their operational efficiency, reduce costs and improve customer satisfaction.
