Inauguration Week: A User Guide to Donald J. Trump’s Big Day in Washington

16 Jan 2017 by Amanda House

WASHINGTON, D.C. – It’s finally here. Inauguration Week. Donald Trump will become the 45th president of the United States on Friday, January 20. Here are some important details to know if you plan on attending (or watching) the transition of power.

When & Where: Most of the festivities will take place Thursday, Jan. 19 through Saturday, Jan. 21 – with Friday being the official seal-the-deal date. Unofficial events, however, will be taking place all week across the nation’s capitol.

Here are the basic need-to-knows, from the welcoming ceremony, to the swearing in, to the parade.

Transportation: DON’T DRIVE. Whatever you do, do not attempt to drive around downtown D.C. later this week. Between the barricades, road closures and sheer amount of spectators, driving will be next to impossible. Take the metro instead and pick up a limited edition SmarTrip card commemorating the inauguration (while supplies last).

This fancy $10 card (a 30% savings, mind you) comes pre-loaded with a one-day pass for unlimited Metrobus and Metrorail rides. What’s even better is you can keep the card: it’s valid both before and after Jan. 20. Add money to it by going online at wmata.com.

Note: A few metro stations will be closed within the security perimeter. For all the metro specifics, click here.

For those who choose to use a ride sharing app like Uber or Lyft, be warned: there will be a geofence in place around the security perimeter. According to USA Today, “the security perimeter will go into effect 48 hours before the ceremony and last until Sunday morning in some areas.” But never fear, “Uber has worked with officials for months to prepare for Inauguration Day, the company said. Its engineers altered its navigation systems to account for road closures and blackout zones and changed dispatch algorithms, so vehicles won’t be matched with riders on the other side of a barrier.”

Bottom line: Leave early and pack patience.

Accommodations: If you don’t already have a place to stay, good luck.

List of Prohibited Items: Ammunition, explosives, weapons – you know, the usuals. But careful, selfie-sticks and balloons also make the long list of “no-no’s”. Click here for a complete list of prohibited items.

Weather: Latest weather forecast models indicate that Trump’s big day may be warmer than normal, with current predictions of temperatures in the 50s and 60s. One would be wise though to come prepared for a chilly few days. Wear layers and don’t forget comfortable shoes: all public events take place outside. Oh, and don’t forget an umbrella, there’s a chance of rain!

Security Measures – for the curious: Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson has said officials expect from 700,000 to 900,000 attendees this week, with 99 groups expected to demonstrate either for or against Donald Trump. With a price tag of tens of millions of dollars, a lot of security measures are coming together, and it’s not just the usual metal detectors and bag checks — though there will be plenty of that. Rooftop snipers, boat restrictions in the Anacostia and Potomac rivers, and “multilevel perimeters” along the viewing areas and parade route will be set in place. Manhole covers are being welded shut, and light poles, trash cans, and even mailboxes are being removed from the area.

Officials say there will be some 28,000 security personnel dedicated to keeping spectators safe. In addition to local law enforcement officers, and those being brought in from out-of-town, this includes help from the Department of Homeland Security, Secret Service, Transportation Security Administration, and Coast Guard, as well as troops from the National Guard.

Staying Safe: Despite the beefed up security, there are still some safety precautions one can take. Don’t carry a ton cash, use a purse with zippers (or even better, a cross body bag), and pack photocopies of all your important documents (think ID, credit cards, airline tickets, etc.).

With such an influx of people, its bound someone is going to get lost. Be sure all children, disabled and elderly people carry an information card, including their name, address, emergency contact info, and medical information.

There is also the potential that some protests may get violent. If this happens, move away from the action as calmly and quickly as possible. Avoid becoming involved and keep your loved ones close. Move into a safe, enclosed area and stay alert.

Exclusive — Inaugural Committee: ‘We Want All Americans’ to Join Donald Trump’s Inauguration; This Is a ‘Movement of Unity for the People’

16 Jan 2017 by Matthew Boyle

Boris Epshteyn, the communications director for the Presidential Inaugural Committee, told Breitbart News Sunday on SiriusXM Patriot Channel 125 this weekend that “things are shaping up wonderfully” ahead of the inauguration of President-elect Donald J. Trump, the incoming 45th President of the United States of America. Throughout the Sunday evening interview, Epshteyn sounded a tone of unifying the country—all people nationwide—behind the new President.

“We have got a great week of events,” Epshteyn said. “Tuesday and Wednesday there’s some private events, the chairman’s dinner, and the vice president’s dinner on Wednesday. The chairman’s dinner is on Tuesday. And then Thursday, we have official events, starting with the laying of the wreaths at Arlington Cemetery, paying homage and honoring those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to our beautiful democracy. And then you have got the concerts on the mall, and the voice of the people—all of these groups, all of these people who are going to participate, flying in to participate, and we’re happy to give them the opportunity. So you have choirs, you have bands, you’ll have performers from all over the country representing the very best of America. And then you’ll have the Make America Great Again celebration—Lee Greenwood, Three Doors Down, and Toby Keith, among other performers. And then, finally, remarks by the President-elect Donald J. Trump on Thursday, and then Friday is the big day, of course.”

Epshteyn noted that while this week, Trump’s inaugural week, is a celebration, the President-elect is eager to get right to work.

“This President-elect, who’s going to be President on January 20, ran to get this country working, to get this country safe, to get this country secure, and that’s what his focus is,” Epshteyn said. “But, of course it’s a celebration, but while it’s a celebration it’s also time to get to work.”

Epshteyn noted that Trump views it as “vital” to honor those who risk their lives to protect the United States and the people, so there is a big focus on the Commander-in-Chief ball which is expanding to include not just active duty servicemen and women, but also veterans, first responders like law enforcement, firefighters and EMTs, as well as wounded warriors.

“It is so vital to honor those who risk their lives for Americans all over the country and all over the world,” Epshteyn said. “Someone going to work in rural Pennsylvania knows that there’s someone else going to bed or waking up across the world fighting to keep their freedom and save their freedom. That is such a key vision, a key portion of the American fabric. So there’s only three official inaugural balls this year. In 2009, there were nine or ten. So we have two official inaugural balls, and then the ball saluting the Armed Services and first responders. So important to honor those who are risking their lives, and as far as the first responders, those are who are keeping American lives safe every day across this country.”

Epshteyn highlighted a few events that the public can attend and pointed people to the Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) website, where people can get more information on where to go and how to get around Washington.

“The key events for the American people are ‘The Voice of the American People Concert’ and the welcome celebration,” Epshteyn said. “All they got to do is show up. Just show up. Enjoy. They’re complimentary, no tickets required. And then for the swearing in: Here are the big moments, the traditional moments and key moments on the 20th. You go from Blair House, where the President-elect is staying to St. John’s, then the traditional coffee and tea meeting between the outgoing President and first lady and incoming President and first lady, and then the swearing in on the West Lawn of the Capitol at noon. We want all Americans—as many as possible—to come and be with us and stand with us. Let’s unite together and celebrate all that’s great in our country. No tickets required. You can get tickets and register if you want, but no tickets required. Just show up.”

He added that this inauguration may be the most historic in U.S. history since the country has elected for the first time ever a businessman who has never held either elected or military office.

“This is the most historic inauguration in a long time and probably in American history,” Epshteyn said. “We’re going to have so many people from across the country, and all these Americans here to come join with us and celebrate the fact that the Trump movement has arrived. And what is that movement? That is a movement of unity for the people. That’s a movement of us being together as a country and working together and being inclusive with each other and being leaders around the world. And it’s pragmatist, and that’s what Donald J. Trump is; he’s pragmatic because he is a businessman. He knows how to get things done under budget and ahead of schedule, and that’s what he’ll be doing as President.”

Leftist Groups Plotting to Disrupt Inauguration Have Attacked Trump Supporters Before

16 Jan 2017 by Lee Stranahan

As a coalition of far-left protesters is converging on Washington, D.C. preparing to cause chaos at the Trump Inauguration during the #DISRUPTJ20 event, Breitbart News has learned that groups planning to attend the event were part of violent protests against Donald Trump that led to assaults against supporters and police, as well as other attacks on pro-liberty groups. One of the organizations involved has specifically reported that Donald Trump supporters are legitimate “targets” for violence.

Despite an incorrect report in Breitbart News calling#DisruptJ20 a “group,” J20 is an event; one that was originally planned just after Donald Trump’s election and is supported by a coalition of 75 different anarchist, socialist and communist groups from across the county.

The organizers call the event “a bold mobilization against the inauguration of Donald Trump” and say its goal is “widespread civil resistance to the streets of Washington, DC.”

One member of the #DisruptJ20 coalition is the website It’s Going Down, which acts an information resource for the America-hating radical left. Last spring, It’s Going Down reported approvingly on the violent disruption of a Donald Trump event near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Breitbart News has identified a number of Pittsburg area groups who have announced their solidarity with the #DisruptJ20 event, including the Pitt Students for a Democratic Society, Pittsburg Autonomous Student Network, the Pittsburgh Student Solidarity Coalition, Pitt Against Debt, the art group NightShade Pittsburgh.

Last year’s “direct action” against people attending a Donald Trump event gives a test of what the #DisruptJ20 protesters have in store for the Trump inauguration and Trump supporters.

USA Today reported on the violent consequences of the group’s actions last year, writing:

Hundreds of demonstrators awaited Trump backers outside the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, dancing and shouting epithets about the presidential hopeful. At the height of the chaos, police shoved and Trump backers lingered for confrontations.

A drum pounded, signs waved and megaphones blared near an exit for the rally, which drew thousands of attendees. Trump backers and protesters shouted at each other in some areas. In others, the demonstration had an almost jubilant flair, with protesters dancing as they chanted: “Hey hey, ho ho, racist bigots have to go,” or “F Donald Trump.”

The result was violence against people attending the Trump event and law enforcement, a foreboding sign for the upcoming D.C. events. TV Station WPXI reported about last spring’s event:

Officers arrested 31-year-old Kennon Hooper, of West Oakland, 27-year-old Lisa Cuyler of Polish Hill and 29-year-old Maxwell Yearick of Perry South.

Police said Hooper kicked two officers after they had been pepper-sprayed by protesters. While he was being handcuffed, Cuyler allegedly jumped on an officer’s back.

In Yearick’s case, he tried to fight an officer who has just been pepper-sprayed, according to investigators.

As Breitbart News reported last year, It’s Going Down bragged about the “full disruption and confrontation” of attendees and justified violence against them, reporting that:

the main factor tying Trump’s base together is support for authoritarianism and white supremacy. The main policy points of Trump’s campaign have been rooted in the widespread criminalization, detention, and expulsion of Muslims, Arabs, latin@s, blacks, and other non-whites from the United States.

Support of Donald Trump and by extension these aims is enough to justify oneself as a target of anti-racist violence.

The Trump event was not the only example of Pittsburg’s far-left community using violent tactics and anarchy against those that they see as legitimate targets. Also last, the publication Three Rivers Rising Tide reported on another disruption by one of the group who’ve pledged support for the upcoming inauguration disruption, writing:

Two dozen Pittsburghers stormed into the American Legislative Exchange Council’s (ALEC) Spring Task Force Summit meeting on Thursday evening, disrupting the lobbying group’s Board of Directors Dinner. While ALEC’s Summit is taking place at the Omni-William Penn, the dinner was held a few blocks away at Heinz Hall.

Hoisting yellow umbrellas with anti-ALEC slogans, a common prop from the 2014 pro-democracy mobilization in Hong Kong, participants rolled out ‘crime scene’ tape and shouted, “This is a crime scene! ALEC is killing us! With private prisons and attacks on workers fueled by greed and hunger for power ALEC is killing us!

The inclusion of the Pittsburgh chapter of Students for a Democratic Society or SDS among the groups supporting the coming #DisruptJ20 event is significant because of the Davis, California SDS chapter was behind Friday night’s violent anti-MILO protest at the University of California.

The SDS is a new incarnation of the 1960s radical group of the same name and has deep connections to a racist Marxist group called the Freedom Road Socialist Organization that is plotting the end of the United States as we know it by dividing the country into race-based nations.

Security will be tight for the inaugural and members of the group Bikers for Trump will also be on hand to provide informal security.

New O’Keefe Video: Leftists Planning Stink Bombs at ‘Deploraball’

16 Jan 2017 by Joel B. Pollak

A new video released Monday by James O’Keefe’s Project Veritas shows left-wing activists allegedly planning to use butyric acid bombs — commonly known as “stink bombs” — to disrupt an event scheduled for the week of Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 45th President of the United States.

The leftists captured on film were allegedly targeting the Deploraball, a grass-roots event being held on Thursday at the National Press Club “to celebrate and honor … the passionate citizens who worked social media, knocked on doors, and endured harassement to support” Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign.

On Friday, several news outlets reported that a group of left-wing activists from the “D.C. Anti-Fascist Coalition,” part of a broader effort called “#DisruptJ20” (for January 20th, the date of the inauguration) had been captured on tape discussing plans to crash the Deplorable, disrupt the parade at the inauguration, and target specific individuals.

Now, Project Veritas reveals just how the left-wing #DisruptJ20 activists may have been prepared to go. According to the video, they allegedly planned to place explosive “stink bomb” devices at the party and, if those failed, to trigger the fire sprinkler system, forcing attendees to evacuate outside in cold weather conditions.

One activist is also heard on the video to threaten the city government of Washington, D.C., and the police:

The message has to be, we do not recognize the city government either. If you try to close us down we will look for your house, we will burn it. We will physically fight the police if they try to steal one of our places. We will go to war and you will lose.

During the campaign, O’Keefe and Project Veritas exposed efforts by the left-wing activists contracted to the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee to stage protests at Republican events, and to incite violence at Donald Trump’s events in particular. Their goal was to create, in their words, a sense of “anarchy” around the candidate.

Now, O’Keefe has apparently revealed further plans to create anarchy and disorder around Trump’s inauguration. And, as he points out in the video, the actions planned by the activists could run afoul of anti-terrorism laws.

O’Keefe and Project Veritas say that they shared the results of their investigation with the FBI, the Secret Service, and the D.C. Metro Police.

In commenting on the video, O’Keefe concludes: “Just to be clear, we don’t have a problem with people protesting peacefully or voicing their First Amendment rights, that’s protected by the Constitution. But in this case, Disrupt J20 says openly that their plan is to shut down the inauguration. The question is where do these people draw the line.”

The video released Monday is Part One of a continued investigation by Project Veritas, which plans to release other videos later in the week.

Pence: ‘The American People Should Be Celebrating the Peaceful Transition of Power’

Jan 16, 2017 By Susan Jones

(CNSNews.com) – Reacting to Rep. John Lewis claim that Donald Trump is not a “legitimate president,” Vice President-elect Mike Pence said on Sunday, “Donald Trump won this election fair and square, thirty of 50 states, more counties than any Republican since Ronald Reagan, and the American people know that.

“And, while I have great respect for John Lewis and for his contributions, particularly with the civil rights movement, I was deeply disappointed to see someone of his stature question the legitimacy of Donald Trump’s election as president and say he’s not attending the inauguration, and I hope he reconsiders both positions.”

Pence, appearing on “Fox News Sunday,” told host Chris Wallace, that Lewis’s comments are also disappointing, “because I truly do believe this is a time when the American people should be celebrating the peaceful transition of power. That’s what this week is really all about, Chris, and to know that four living presidents will be on the stage acknowledging that peaceful transition of power, the world will be watching, will hear the first remarks that Donald will make as president of the United States in his inaugural address.”

Lewis told NBC’s “Meet the Press” he thinks “there was a conspiracy on the part of the Russians and others” to hurt Clinton and help Trump get elected.

Pence said he hopes John Lewis and several dozen other Democrats who plan to boycott the inauguration “will rethink that, will be with us and will celebrate this extraordinary moment in the life of our nation and the life of democracy.”

As for Trump’s tweeted criticism of John Lewis, Pence said, “I think Donald Trump has the right to defend himself.”

In a series of tweets on Saturday, Trump said:

“Congressman John Lewis should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart (not to……mention crime infested) rather than falsely complaining about the election results. All talk, talk, talk – no action or results. Sad!”

And:

“Congressman John Lewis should finally focus on the burning and crime infested inner-cities of the U.S. I can use all the help I can get!”

Pence said Trump was talking about “generations of failed policies coming out of Washington, D.C., that have failed too many families and too many cities across this country.

“I will tell you, Donald Trump is a man who is profoundly impatient with failure,” Pence continued. “And you saw in the campaign, he went to major cities in this country and said we are going to bring safety to our streets. We’re going to bring school choice to our children. We’re going to bring jobs and opportunities to our cities.

“You remember that great line “what the heck do you have to lose?” He’s committed to being president of all the people in this country and to bring new jobs and prosperity in ways that the failed liberal policies of the last several generations have not.”
