Indicates He’ll Rely on Democrats to Pass CR That Funds Planned Parenthood

(CNSNews.com) – House Speaker John Boehner said on CBS’s “Face the Nation” this morning that there will be no government shutdown—thus signaling that the House of Representatives he will lead until the end of next month will not send the Senate a continuing resolution that Democrats there would filibuster because it prohibits funding of Planned Parenthood or that President Barack Obama would veto for the same reason.

In response to a follow-up question from host John Dickerson, Boehner said he was “sure” the funding bill he will put through the Republican-majority House will need Democratic votes to pass.

The law currently funding the government will expire on Wednesday, the last day of fiscal 2015.

Dickerson of CBS asked Boehner: “Four days, the government runs out of money. Is there going to be a shutdown?”

“No,” said Boehner.

“The Senate is expected to pass a continuing resolution next week,” said Boehner. “The House will take up the Senate bill. We will also take up a select committee to investigate these horrific videos that we have seen from abortion clinics in several states that really raise questions about the use of federal funds and raise questions about aborted fetuses that are born alive.”

In other words, the Republican congressional leadership at this time is separating legislation to fund the federal government after Wednesday from the question of whether to fund Planned Parenthood.

In its latest annual report, Planned Parenthood said that it did 327,653 abortions in fiscal 2013—the latest year for which it has reported its abortion numbers. It also said that in the year that ended on June 30, 2014, it received $528.4 million in “government health services grants and reimbursements.”

The “horrific videos” Boehner referred to are a series of videos released by the Center for Medical Progress that show Planned Parenthood officials discussing the harvesting of tissue from aborted babies.

CBS’s Dickerson followed up with Boehner by asking him if the CR that Boehner intends to bring up for a vote will need Democratic votes to pass—presumably because so many conservatives in the House will refuse to vote for legislation the funds Planned Parenthood. Boehner had no doubt that it would.

“The continuing resolution, will that require Democratic votes to pass?” asked Dickerson.

“I’m sure it will,” said Boehner. “But I expect my Democrat colleagues want to keep the government open as much as I do.”

Toward the end of the interview, Dickerson asked Boehner: “[D]o you have anything that you can say, now that you’re headed out the door, that you wouldn’t have said if you had to go through another election?”

“No. I love my colleagues, even love the ones I don’t–that may disagree with me, Republicans or Democrats,” Boehner said. “I love my colleagues. I love the institution. And I try to do the best thing every day. I’m a simple guy.

“Just try to do the right things for the right reasons, and the right things will happen,” Boehner said.

Huckabee: Invoke 5th and 14th Amendment to Protect Unborn Babies from Abortion

(CNSNews.com) – GOP presidential candidate former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee told Values Voter Summit attendees on Friday in Washington, D.C., that unborn babies already have constitutional protection and as president he will use the 5th and 14th Amendment to protect unborn babies from abortion.

“Since it is a human being, we already have the constitutional protection. It’s called the 5th Amendment that says that there will be due process before you deprive a person of life or liberty. As president, we will invoke the 5th and 14th Amendment. We will protect human life,” he said.

The 5th Amendment of the Constitution says in part: “No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.”

The 14th Amendment of the Constitution says in part: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”

Huckabee said that for 42 years ever since the U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortion through Roe v. Wade in 1973, “we have lived under the notion that it is a human right and privilege to take the life of an unborn child.” He warned that even if Republicans defund Planned Parenthood, it will just make way for someone else to do it.

“Now I know one of the biggest battles going on in this city right now, and it’s a worthy battle and an important one – defund Planned Parenthood,” said Huckabee.

“When I hear people act as if, if we could just defund Planned Parenthood, man, we could break our arms patting ourselves on the back for being such heroes of the life movement, I want to just remind you of something: for 42 years, we have lived under the notion that it is a human right and privilege to take the life of an unborn child,” Huckabee added.

“Here’s what I’d like to propose: that we do something far bolder than simply cut out the funding for one agency that provides abortions, because as important as that is, it doesn’t end the nightmare, the scourge. It does not end this horrible, uncivilized savage behavior. It just moves it over to let someone else do it,” he said.

Huckabee said as president, he would raise the question: “Is the unborn child a person, is it just a blob of tissue?”

“And I believe with all my heart the answer to that question, we all know, it is a person,” he added.

Huckabee said no one ever said, “I’m going to have a blob of tissue.”

“None of your daughters and daughters-in-law ever called you up and said, Congratulations. Guess what? I’m going to have a blob of tissue. They called and said, I’m going to have a baby,” he said.

“I’m tired of hearing us say, oh maybe one day we can get a constitutional amendment, maybe we can get the courts to overturn Roe Wade. I’ve got a better idea: Since it is a human being, we already have the constitutional protection. It’s called the 5th Amendment that says that there will be due process before you deprive a person of life or liberty,” Huckabee said.

“As president, we will invoke the 5th and 14th Amendment. We will protect human life,” he added.

According to its website, the Values Voter Summit was created in 2006 as a forum to inform and mobilize U.S. citizens “to preserve the bedrock values of traditional marriage, religious liberty, sanctity of life and limited government that make our nation strong.” Its primary sponsor is FRC Action, the legislative affiliate arm of the Family Research Council.

Rep. Diane Black to Pelosi: ‘Watch Those Films and Get Back to Me’

(CNSNews.com) – Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.) issued a statement Monday in response to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) speculation on CNN’s “State of the Union” that the undercover videos showing Planned Parenthood officials discussing the harvesting of unborn baby parts aren’t “real,” despite admitting that she hadn’t seen the videos.

Black called on Pelosi to “watch these films and get back” to her.

“I don’t stipulate that these videos are real,” Pelosi told Jake Tapper in an interview Sunday. “Now, I haven’t seen–I’ve seen some news reports of it, but I also know that it’s not real, and you can create any reality that you want.”

“Nancy Pelosi and her fellow Planned Parenthood enthusiasts in Congress are embarrassing themselves by continuing to deny what we have all seen with our own eyes,” Black said.

“They cannot defend the barbaric activities revealed on these undercover videos, so they demonize and dismiss the source instead. I get it – this is a conversation that Democrats do not want to have, but these videos are indeed real and pretending otherwise will not change the gruesome reality of what is happening behind closed doors at Planned Parenthood clinics across this country,” Black emphasized.

“It is telling that, in her attempt to discredit these videos, Mrs. Pelosi said ‘you can create any reality that you want.’ In a sense, she is right. After all, that is exactly what Democrats have done by choosing to ignore the legitimacy of these films,” said Black.

Black called it “shameful” that “days after Pope Francis exhorted Congress to ‘protect and defend human life at every stage of its development,’ Democrats are already back to their old tricks and are blindly ignoring the truth to justify their continued support of this scandal-ridden abortion giant.”

“I encourage Nancy Pelosi to watch these films and then get back to me,” Black concluded.

Pelosi is not the first member of Congress to criticize the undercover Planned Parenthood videos but admit to not watching them.

Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) attacked a witness for “testifying based on edited videos” at the House Judiciary Committee’s hearing to investigate Planned Parenthood, which he called a “show trial.” Johnson later admitted, however, that he had not seen any of the footage himself, edited or otherwise.

The pro-life group, Susan B. Anthony List, invited some 2,000 Democrat staffers to attend a screening of the undercover videos on Sept. 3. Fewer than 10 Democrat staffers showed up out of the 2,000 invited, and only three actually watched the videos – just two of whom watched all of the 90-plus minutes of video footage.

Taxpayers in the State of Washington are funding the disturbing practice of fitting extremely young public school girls with implantable long-lasting birth control devices, according to documents received by conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch.

Girls as young as 10 attending public schools in Seattle have been implanted with intrauterine devices (IUDs), the documents show, and as exposed by Life News in July, the children do not need to obtain parents’ permission before the procedure is performed.

While data is still incomplete for 2015, the documents, provided by the Washington Health Care Authority, reveal children as young as 10 and teens from all age groups received implants throughout 2013 and 2014.

“[T]he records show that in 2014 and at least part of 2015, girls as young as 10 received the implants. The largest group of minors that got the birth control implants was 17 years old, according to the data, but girls much younger also received them,” reports Judicial Watch.

“Four 11-year-olds got birth control from the state during the 2 ½- year period and so did more than 100 girls between the ages of 12 and 13. The numbers go up as the girls get older with 364 girls age 14 getting the implants and 744 15-year-olds. The records show that 2,336 girls ages 16 to 17 were given implants during this period.”

The IUD implant requires an extremely invasive procedure in which a device is inserted directly into the uterus. The device either emits hormones which typically prevent sperm from fertilizing an egg, or includes copper which is toxic to sperm.

The cost of the procedure is evidently covered for low income families by Medicaid, but children can also access the device by using their own money, or parents’ insurance plans – even without their knowledge.

Life News also highlighted the ironic nature of the program, pointing out how children in Seattle can freely opt into contraception, while at the same time being unable to purchase a soft drink:

“So, a young teen in Seattle can’t get a coke at her high school, but she can have a device implanted into her uterus, which can unknowingly kill her unborn child immediately after conception. Or, if she uses another method, she can increase her chances of health risks for herself, especially if using a new method.”

Judicial Watch notes the State of Washington did not provide requested data regarding adverse events. “Evidently, the state isn’t tracking the negative health consequences from administering the implants in young girls,” JW writes.

Judicial Watch also asked for data concerning the amount of children who received the implant with or without parental consent, “but the state evidently doesn’t keep track and no records were produced.”

As the political watchdog group reports, the effort can be viewed as part of a growing trend by states to override parental consent.

“Last month a separate JW investigation found that Oregon offers minors taxpayer-funded sex change without parental consent. In a matter of months dozens of kids—some younger than 9—received sex-change therapy in Oregon, which earlier this year made it legal for minors to undergo radical treatment for ‘gender dysphoria’ without permission from a parent or guardian.”

7 Ways John Boehner Failed Conservatives, Leading to Resignation

House Speaker John Boehner announced in a Friday meeting with his fellow Republicans that he will resign his seat in Congress at the end of October, putting down the speaker’s gavel he took up in 2011, The New York Times reported.

It was previously reported that Boehner would face an all-but-certain floor vote this fall that could’ve ousted him from the position and made room for fresh blood.

Gathered below are seven reasons Boehner’s nearly five-year run left him embattled in his own party, precipitating his resignation.

1. He is unpopular among conservative voters — “Of the 4,025 polled, less than 6 percent would want their Representative to re-elect Boehner as House Speaker if the election were held today,” Citizens United President David Bossie wrote in July. “Grassroots conservatives are through being patient with John Boehner.”

2. His frequent crying does not instill confidence — In the past, Boehner has wept openly while giving speeches, adding a heartfelt touch to political events that can often be quite dry. In July of this year, however, he shed tears while speaking to an interviewer from The Golf Channel, of all places — an incident that many commented was a bit strange.

3. He lost many Obamacare arguments in the media — This year, several left-leaning media outlets sought to hold Boehner accountable for his past predictions about the Affordable Care Act, and he failed to hit back. Chuck Todd of NBC’s “Meet the Press” asked Boehner if he was wrong on Obamacare, as more people had insurance as a result, and the country added jobs the year it was implemented. Boehner’s response quickly went into the weeds, talking about hours worked and employer burdens — arguments few found compelling.

4. He has been slow to react to political opportunities — Rep. Richard Nugent, R-Florida, was kicked off the Rules Committee after he publicly criticized Boehner for his shortcomings. He specifically called out Boehner’s 18-month delay in appointing a select committee to investigate the 2012 Benghazi attacks, as well as his months-long delay in filing a lawsuit against President Barack Obama’s overreaching executive actions.

5. He has a record of voting to inflate the nation’s debt — As FreedomWorks reported, Boehner voted at least five times from 2002 to 2008 to increase the U.S. debt by $450 billion to $900 billion at a time. “[I]n total, John Boehner voted to increase America’s debt by 3.631 trillion-with-a-t dollars,” the conservative outfit reported.

6. He is unlikely to fight for defunding Planned Parenthood this fall — After multiple undercover videos have called into question whether the organization has violated the law in performing abortions, many high-profile Republicans called for defunding. After Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell signaled an unwillingness to fight in the face of a likely veto from Obama, Boehner is likely to follow suit.

7. He worked with Democrats to pass the “cromnibus” bill funding Obama’s immigration plans — This past December, 67 Republicans voted against the legislation, while Boehner sided with the opposition party, harnessing 57 of their votes to pass the bill. He then offered empty rhetoric to his conservative colleagues, vowing an immigration fight in 2015 that has yet to materialize.

Virginia Rep. Dave Brat, who had a role in the House leadership change when he defeated Majority Whip Eric Cantor in the 2014 GOP primary, says the next House speaker must put his plan on paper — and follow through.

Brat’s unexpected defeat of Cantor caused House Speaker John Boehner to delay his resignation from Congress for a year, Boehner said in announcing his departure last week.

Brat said Monday on Fox News Channel’s “Your World with Neil Cavuto” that he admires Boehner personally, but that neither he nor Cantor had followed through on their promise to reverse several gains made by Democrats.

“Speaker Boehner and Majority Leader Cantor made a pledge to America to replace Obamacare, keep the budget caps, three days to repeal, to rebuild, reform Fannie and Freddie, enforce sanctions in Iran, roll back non-discretionary spending,” Brat said.

“So who set the expectations? The speaker did, and Eric Cantor set the expectations when they were running for office.”

Boehner criticized those in the more conservative wing, calling them “false prophets.” Brat, a seminary graduate, said Boehner and Cantor put their promises on paper, which he compared to the Ten Commandments, then didn’t follow through.

“I ran on the Republican Creed in Virginia and I’m very serious about putting your ideas on paper,” Brat said, adding he will support for speaker whoever most abides by those principles.

Brat said accusations that conservatives want to shut down the government over Planned Parenthood funding are false.

“The Planned Parenthood films are awful, but that’s a shiny object that the end of the debate,” he said. “Our own team and our own leadership announced we were going to break the budget caps four months ago. Planned Parenthood only came up about a month ago.”
