It is a rarity that I agree with today’s union bosses. However, in this instance, as unions are currently doing to Democrats supportive of fast-tracking ObamaTrade, Republican lawmakers who have bending over (backward) to appease transnational corporate lobbyists by backing the secret trade pact called the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) need to hear from voters—and fast.
According to the Detroit News, fast-track will be voted on in the House of Representatives this week.
In the House, nearly all Democrats oppose the measure, which may have the support of fewer than 20 Democrats. The White House will rely on Republicans to get the 218 votes needed to approve the bill.
Although unions have dubbed ObamaTrade “NAFTA on steroids,” it is more than that.
Here are some of the things that ObamaTrade does, according to one source:
– Only two of its 26 chapters actually cover trade issues such as tariffs and quotas.
– Obamatrade would submit the U.S. to the jurisdiction of international tribunals established under the auspices of the United Nations or World Bank.
– Obamatrade would surrender control of 544 million acres of public land – a quarter of the entire U.S. land area – to international authorities.
– It would establish a system of foreign tribunals higher in authority than even the U.S. Supreme Court that could overrule federal court rulings
– Obamatrade would shift decisions over the payment of U.S. tax dollars away from Congress and outside of the Constitutionally-established Article III federal court system (or even U.S. state system) to the authority of international tribunals.
– Obama’s agreement would obligate the federal government to force U.S. states to conform state laws to 1000 pages of rules, regulations and constraints unrelated to trade – from land use to whether foreign firms operating in a state can be required to meet the same laws as domestic firms.
– Obamatrade would empower foreign companies to use foreign tribunals to enforce special privileges only available to them. Obamatrade would exempt foreign companies from EPA and other onerous regulations that American firms would still be forced to comply with.
– Under Obamatrade, foreign companies could actually go to an international tribunal and sue American taxpayers for cash awards to compensate them for costs associated with government regulations – something American-owned companies would not be able to do.
– Obamatrade rewrites the global rules of the Internet to impose restrictive rules that Congress rejected when it rejected SOPA, PIPA and ACTA.
– The TPP includes some 26 separate chapters that affect our sovereignty, jobs, businesses, farms, food, consumer safety, immigration, the Internet and more.
Moreover, according to Forbes, under the draft provisions of the TPP to be leaked by Wikileaks, “countries could be barred from trying to control where their citizens’ personal data is held or whether it’s accessible from outside the country.”
…and, by and large, this monstrosity has been negotiated in secret.
Inside-the-beltway Republicans like Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) 64% and Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) N/A% are used to saying one thing and doing another when it comes to fighting for America, so it is no real surprise they have signed onto ObamaTrade.
However, it seems as though some of the Class of 2010 and other so-called “conservatives” have begun to get too acccustomed to beltway brown-nosing as well.
Republicans in the House who are supporting ObamaTrade appear to be either so awash with corporate lobbyists’ wine, or haven’t bothered to read the bill—and, quite possibly, both.
Devil’s Pact
Notwithstanding the fact that Republicans trusting Barack Obama with anything more than reading parking meters is a fool’s folly, it is the Republicans who have seemed to have formed a Devil’s Pact with the President on the secret trade deal.
In addition to unions opposing granting fast-track to Obama on TPP, a wide array of conservatives are also against it. This list includes the Americans for Limited Government, the American Family Association, Center for Security Policy, and the Eagle Forum.
Even Donald Trump is opposed to the idea.
Like ObamaCare, the Obama Administration is relying on the “stupidity of voters“—except, this time, it is the stupidity of Republican voters in Congress—to get their deal done.
As stated at the top of this post, it is a rarity that I find myself in agreement with today’s union bosses.
However, like ObamaCare (which unions wholeheartedly supported), ObamaTrade is a bad deal for America and it must be stopped now.
Americans, conservative and liberal alike, have much to be concerned about with fast-tracking TPP. It is up to voters to let their representatives know now that selling out America to a bunch of crony capitalists around the world is a declaration of war on the American people.

Former EPA Scientist Speaks Against GMOs

A former senior scientist from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been speaking out against GMOs, but his voice is especially noteworthy among the many scientists who talk about genetically modified organisms. Why? Because he studied the impacts of altered crops on the environment. Read on to find out what this expert has to say about a genetically modified world and the ‘pesticide treadmill’ that biotech has us all running on.
Dr. Ramon Seidler’s credentials are nothing to sneeze at. He was a professor of microbiology at Oregon State University for 16 years before he worked at the EPA. He holds many honors, too, including being listed by the International Biographical Centre of Cambridge, England as one of the 2,000 outstanding World Scientists of the 20th Century.
During Seidler’s tenure at the EPA, he (along with other scientists) conducted GMO experiments that were contained in indoor environments. The experiments were meant to mimic what happens outside, just as if a farmer had planted a GM crop in Idaho, Michigan, or California. The gene transfer capabilities and survival rates of genetically modified seed were observed. He also observed transgenic DNA and Bt toxin products in agricultural ecosystems.
What he and his scientific peers found was that GE bacteria survived for years in soil, even after it was removed from the plants.
The former professor states that GE crops provide no significant increase in crop yields, but do pose several other major concerns: namely cross-pollination of non-GM species, and negative impacts to the environment. He calls these ‘side effects’ of broken biotech promises.
He also points out that one-third of the world already has the choice to ‘opt-out’ of GMOs because their food is labeled, and though Americans overwhelmingly want GM foods to be labeled, they are not.
As other scientists have pointed out, Seidler mentions the fact that very little true research has been conducted by independent scientists at any American universities. Biotech has restricted these studies by requesting that professors sign an agreement prior to the research being completed which forces them to send all results to the biotech companies before being published – ostensibly – to be vetted and discounted should it paint their GM seed in any negative light.
The former scientist says this is nothing short of censorship, and individuals who have conducted years of research are unable to publish their findings in any reputable journals because biotech would simply veto the results.
Seidler also details how the biotechnology industry has parroted the claim that “pesticide use has declined’ since they introduced GMOs, but he states this is absolutely untrue. He commented:
“Initially, insecticide use declined due to the effectiveness of Bt toxin in controlling pest insects. However, as time went on glyphosate use increased some 13-fold to control weeds and other non-genetically engineered synthetic chemicals were introduced to control insects as the Bt toxin became ineffective.
Glyphosate has been extensively applied to hundreds of millions of acres of genetically engineered crops, and the residues are in our air, water, and human bodies.
Now virtually all of genetically engineered seeds are coated with insecticides and fungicides and these chemicals have increased some 10-fold in the last 10 years.
When seed coated pesticides are added to those pesticides that are injected into the soil at seed planting, pesticide use climbed back to where it was approximately 10-12 years ago.”
This ‘pesticide treadmill’ as Seidler has dubbed it, has all of us sick, and our soil contaminated.

Former EPA scientist: Biotech companies encouraging pesticide treadmill

Dr. Ramon Seidler, a retired senior scientist from the US Environmental Protection Agency, has become a leading spokesperson against genetically modified foods and the increasing use of pesticides with GM crops. He actively supported Oregon’s GMO labeling initiative, Measure 92, which was narrowly defeated last fall.
Dr. Seidler’s criticism of GMOs is noteworthy because during his career at the EPA he studied the impacts of genetically modified organisms on the environment. He and his fellow researchers developed methods to evaluate and predict the survival, multiplication, gene exchange, effects, and dispersal of GMOs. He published papers on these topics.
Prior to his work at the EPA, Dr. Seidler was a professor of microbiology at Oregon State University for 16 years.
Dr. Seidler was elected as Fellow in the American Academy for Microbiology. He was listed by the International Biographical Centre of Cambridge, England as one of the 2,000 Outstanding World Scientists of the 20th Century. He twice received the EPA Bronze Medal for research service to the agency and has authored or co-authored more than 150 scientific peer reviewed publications.
Tell me about your research on genetically engineered crops when you were at the EPA?
Dr. Ramon Seidler: We learned how to conduct experiments in contained indoor environments. In these self-contained units that mimicked the environment, we studied the fate, survival, and gene transfer capabilities of GMOs. Later we were the first team in the world to conduct an outdoor experiment involving different types of genetically engineered alfalfa inoculated with GE beneficial root bacteria. We discovered that the GE bacteria survived for years in the soil, even after the removal of the alfalfa plants.
We also studied the persistence of transgenic DNA and Bt toxin products in agricultural ecosystems.
What are some of the problems you see with genetically engineered crops?
Dr. Seidler: From the risk assessment, economic, and legal perspectives there are many issues. There is a mixture of unfilled promises, concerns over litigation resulting from cross pollination and seed comingling events, and a disappointment that crop management practices have had significant negative impacts upon environmental biosafety. All of these side effects are happening despite no yield or production advantages of GE crops over traditional crops. There are also major concerns over whether the increased use of pesticides on our food crops have impacts upon the human population.
Over 90 percent of Americans wish we had labels on our foods to indicate when GE products are present. One-third of the world has this choice because their foods are labeled, but Americans are denied that option.
Very little sound research has been conducted by independent scientists in American universities. This is because industry essentially restricted such research by requiring professors sign an agreement prior to the research that any published information first be sent to the biotechnology seed industry for review. This de facto censorship discourages scientists and their students from becoming involved in conducting years of research that may never reach the scientific peer reviewed literature.
Other countries are rejecting US food products because of genetic contamination. The 2013 discovery of genetically engineered wheat growing illegally in Oregon prevented farmers in our county and elsewhere from exporting their non-GMO wheat until the situation was resolved.
Genetic engineering proponents say that these crops have reduced pesticide use. What is your reaction to that?

What is the pesticide treadmill?
Dr. Seidler: The massive continuing use of genetically engineered Bt toxin and glyphosate-based weed killer on crops planted on hundreds of millions of acres for nearly 20 years has selected for insect and weed resistances. These resistances were anticipated by many scientists, including by Dr. Rachel Carson, author of Silent Spring, a landmark book published in 1962. The chemical industry’s answer to these resistance problems is to genetically engineer crops to be resistant to other chemicals, leading to the pesticide treadmill. One chemical leads to the next chemical, and the next, etc. The current result of this strategy is to use paired combinations of herbicides on our food crops, including 2,4-D, Dicamba, Glufosinate, Isoxaflutole plus glyphosate-based chemicals.
Some people have expressed concerns about possible synergistic effects from the use of two herbicides together, that they might be stronger than each individually. I believe that regulatory scientists did not require industry to evaluate the combined effects of paired herbicides. It would be appropriate to see toxicology risk assessments conducted with chemical products that will be sprayed onto our food crops with the actual commercial mixture being tested, not just tests on the so-called “active” ingredients.
My first concern with 2,4-D is whether it is truly free from a horrifically toxic class of chemicals called dioxins. Industry has stated the 2,4-D that will be used is free from dioxin contamination. It would have been reassuring if the regulators had asked industry to conduct periodic chemicals analyses with batches of 2,4-D to document whether dioxins are present.
What can be done to address this chemical onslaught?
Dr. Seidler: A paradigm shift is needed in the large-scale crop production methods used in industrialized nations. As Rachel Carson said over 50 years ago, scientists need to conduct thorough ecologically based evaluations to determine the consequences of using new chemicals in the environment. There needs to be a thorough, transparent investigation to determine how long a pesticide persists in nature and what the ecological and toxicological effects are from its use.
The pesticide treadmill is an incomplete, ineffective option that will lead to a temporary solution but continuing need for new pest treatment strategies and thus new chemical sales by the biotechnology industry. The omission of synthetic chemicals and the deletion of a fossil fuel-based agricultural system are necessary parts of the paradigm shift, and this means eliminating the current genetically engineered crop-based form of agriculture.
What would be your recommendations for creating a healthy sustainable food system?
Dr. Seidler: It is understood widely that a petroleum and chemical-based, corporate agriculture involving GE crops is not a solution for promoting soil health and carbon sequestration to reverse global warming and for promoting sustainable food production. Developing new and applying proven methods that maintain soil sustainability and sequester carbon into soil to reverse global warming will require concerted efforts by world scientists.
However, we already have an excellent store of information and practice that allows us to immediately restore billions of degraded acres worldwide without relying on “cheap,” and destructive petrochemical-based solutions. The methods currently available today are referred to as agroecology, restoration ecology, and organic farming.

Petitions launched to demand Home Depot and Lowe’s pull cancer-causing glyphosate herbicide from store shelves

(NaturalNews) As news of glyphosate’s toxicity continues to spread, retailers across Europe are dropping the deadly chemical in rapid succession. Over just the last few days, Swiss supermarkets have halted sales of the hazardous chemical, with both Coop and Migros now removing glyphosate products from store shelves.
Earlier, German retailer REWE also halted sales of glyphosate products, and German ministers have called for an EU-wide ban on glyphosate. Similarly, the entire Dutch Parliament recently voted to ban glyphosate sales to individuals across the entire country.
Glyphosate is the key ingredient in Roundup herbicide, and it’s currently sold to consumers in retail stores across America, including Lowe’s, Home Depot, Tractor Supply and many others.
Glyphosate scientifically linked to cancer
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) recently concluded that glyphosate was a probable carcinogen, meaning it causes cancer. That announcement was published in The Lancet, and it was based on “…17 experts from 11 countries [who] met at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC; Lyon, France) to assess the carcinogenicity of the organophosphate pesticides tetrachlorvinphos, parathion, malathion, diazinon, and glyphosate.” You can read about it in more detail at this link at GMOevidence.com.
We’ve also recently learned that Monsanto knew 35 years ago that glyphosate was linked to cancer, but the EPA — always faithful to its corporate masters — covered up the evidence. (Today, the EPA has similarly announced that fracking doesn’t contaminate well water… yet another sellout of the citizenry to Big Business.)
Class action lawsuits are already forming to sue Monsanto for the damaging health effects of its products, and those lawsuits may theoretically extend to retailers who are selling the hazardous chemical.
Two Change.org petitions now launched, targeting Lowe’s and Home Depot for selling cancer-causing glyphosate
Two petitions have now been launched to demand that U.S. big box retailers Lowe’s and Home Depot join the actions of European retailers to ban the sale of glyphosate from their retail stores.
Selling cancer-causing herbicide violates marketplace ethics and corporate responsibility
Both Lowe’s and Home Depot are big box retailers that sell products for residential and commercial construction. They retail tools, plumbing supplies, home appliances, painting supplies, light fixtures, lumber and so on.
Both retailers feature large, well-stocked garden and plant sections where glyphosate is prominently marketed under various brand names including Monsanto’s Roundup. The over-the-counter availability of this poison implies that it’s safe to handle and use around homes, animals and children. As a result, many public schools areas are sprayed with glyphosate, exposing children to this chemical that we now know is linked to cancer. Municipal parks and other public grounds are also frequently sprayed with glyphosate, causing the widespread contamination of entire cities with glyphosate thanks to wind drift.
Astonishingly, glyphosate has been linked to cancer at parts per trillion concentrations, meaning just one gallon of glyphosate purchased at Lowe’s or Home Depot can contaminate an entire city full of innocent citizens, including children.
How many children are being exposed to this cancer-causing chemical right now because retailers like Lowe’s and Home Depot make this readily available to anyone who wants to purchase it? It wasn’t long ago that pharmacy retailers like CVS and Walgreens stopped selling cold medicines over the counter to prevent people from turning those ingredients into street meth. That was a decision grounded in some level of corporate responsibility to prevent products they sell from being used to harm human beings. Yet Home Depot and Lowe’s are selling an herbicide chemical that can cause cancer, leading to death.
Astonishingly, both Lowe’s and Home Depot will sell deadly glyphosate chemicals to children and teens, with no ID required and no age requirement on its purchase.
We must educate Lowe’s and Home Depot about the toxicity and danger of glyphosate
We realize Home Depot and Lowe’s aren’t “evil” corporations like Monsanto itself. Their product buyers probably have no idea that glyphosate is even being banned by other retailers around the world… and they have no intention of contributing to our ongoing cancer epidemic that kills innocent people by the hundreds of thousands each year. They just want to offer products that they see as improving the lives of their customers.
So it’s up to us to educate Lowe’s and Home Depot about the toxicity of the glyphosate herbicide they’re selling. We need to wake them up to this issue and make them aware that we expect them to act with a sense of corporate integrity and compassion for human like. We expect them to take a serious look at this issue, recognize the urgent safety issues of how glyphosate negatively impacts human health, and pull this chemical from store shelves to prevent even more people from being harmed by it — just like retailers are already doing across Europe (with more bans yet to come globally).

Why GMO and vaccine pushers should be arrested for racketeering

(NaturalNews) Democratic U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island has ramped up his rhetoric against the “fossil fuel industry,” and he thinks that the government may be able to make a case against it for racketeering. Sen. Whitehouse should be careful what he asks for; he may just get it, in spades.
Whitehouse, in a recent op-ed in The Washington Post argues that the federal government ought to examine whether the fossil fuel industry’s marketing practices are in fact violations of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, or RICO, statutes – laws that were originally enacted decades ago to prosecute criminal organizations.
In particular, he noted, “Fossil fuel companies and their allies are funding a massive and sophisticated campaign to mislead the American people about the environmental harm caused by carbon pollution.”
In making his argument, he compares the government’s 1999 case against Big Tobacco, which denied for years the health dangers of smoking. Eventually, federal courts found such denials, and resultant marketing practices based on such denials, to be a racketeering enterprise, Whitehouse wrote.
How about RICO charges against GMO shills and vaccine pushers instead?
“The Big Tobacco playbook looked something like this: (1) pay scientists to produce studies defending your product; (2) develop an intricate web of PR experts and front groups to spread doubt about the real science; (3) relentlessly attack your opponents,” he wrote.
“Thankfully, the government had a playbook, too: the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, or RICO. In 1999, the Justice Department filed a civil RICO lawsuit against the major tobacco companies and their associated industry groups, alleging that the companies ‘engaged in and executed — and continue to engage in and execute — a massive 50-year scheme to defraud the public, including consumers of cigarettes, in violation of RICO.'”
Though Big Tobacco spent years and millions of dollars fighting the government, through the discovery process, federal prosecutors eventually plowed through the layers of deceit and denial to demonstrate that the tobacco industry knew all along what kind of health problems originated with smoking.
Now, this uber-liberal senator from the bluest of all blue states wants government lawyers sicced on Big Oil, because he says the industry has engaged in similar tactics to hide the ill effects of fossil fuels on the environment (more on that in a moment).
What would Sen. Whitehouse think about using government RICO statutes to go after, say, Monsanto and Merck, two of the world’s largest pushers of GMOs and vaccines, respectively?
If you think about it, these two industries have engaged in the very same tactics used by Big Tobacco. Monsanto has falsified data surrounding GMOs, has developed a massive PR campaign to defend GMOs, has spread doubt about the real science and has built a network of hatchet men and groups to “relentlessly attack” opponents. The same is true of the vaccine companies.
