-Surgeon General Confirmation a MASSIVE BLOW to Pro Gun Groups
-Republican Senator Mark Kirk of Illinois Just Slapped 2nd Amendment Activists In The Face

12.16.2014 by Yehuda Remer

In a massive blow to the pro-gun community, the Senate has confirmed Obama’s nomination for America’s next surgeon general.

Dr. Vivek Murthy was confirmed by a vote of 51-43 in a major defeat against the NRA and many other gun groups. Murthy has been criticized for his gun stance believing it to be a public health issue.

Guns.com writes that the NRA, “fears the Obama Administration may be attempting to use the Office of the Surgeon General to launch an anti-gun agenda.”

In a December 9th letter written by Chris Cox, the NRA’s executive Director for Legislative Action, and sent to Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell, Cox wrote, “Dr. Murthy’s political activism on behalf of a radical gun control agenda compromises his ability to speak to a broad segment of the American public on questions of health and science.”

“As ‘America’s Doctor, Vivek will hit the ground running to make sure every American has the information they need to keep themselves and their families safe,” Obama said in a released statement.

Some on the Hill also believe that Murthy is not the write man for the job. Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va) said, “After meeting with Dr. Murthy, I don’t question his medical qualifications. I just question whether the public will believe that he can separate his political beliefs from his public health views,

But Murthy had the support of many Medical groups such as the New England Journal of Medicine who went after the NRA for “blocking” Murthy’s confirmation as well as Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety.

“The United States Senate today stood up to the gun lobby by confirming Dr. Vivek Murthy as our country’s next surgeon general – an important step forward in addressing gun violence in our country as a public health problem,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety.

Dan Gross, the president of the Brady Campaign also weighed in. “Now we have a Surgeon General who recognizes that gun violence is a serious public health issue that America urgently needs to address,” he said.

Republican Senator Mark Kirk of Illinois Just Slapped 2nd Amendment Activists In The Face

Dec 16, 2014 By Kimberly Morin

The Senate voted to confirm the least experienced Surgeon General in history. Not only is Vivek Murthy lacking in actual qualifications, his resume speaks more to him being a “Community Activist” for Obamacare and for gun control than actually being a surgeon.

Not only is he probably one of the worst nominations for this role in history but it was clearly just political payback from Obama. Apparently Senator Kirk, “Republican” from Illinois, owed someone some favors as well being the only Senate Republican to vote for Murthy and being the deciding vote.

This comes at a time when Illinois gun owners are finally able to practice their basic right to self-defense after fighting battles in courts. Some claim Kirk defied the NRA but the reality is Kirk defied his own constituents and his Oath to uphold the Bill of Rights. Clearly he doesn’t take much heed to this vote based on his past voting record.

From Bob Owens at Bearing Arms:

Behold the face of a traitor to the Second Amendment.

Republican Senator Mark Kirk of Illinois cast the 51st and only Republican vote that confirmed rabidly anti-gun Vivek Murthy to be the next U.S. Attorney General.

The Senate on Monday narrowly confirmed Vivek Murthy to be the nation’s surgeon general, making him one of the highest-profile beneficiaries of the Senate’s nuclear option.

The nomination was strongly opposed by the National Rifle Association because of Murthy’s support of gun-control laws and by Republicans who doubted that a 37-year-old physician was qualified for the public health position.

Democrats confirmed him, 51-43, with the support of a lone Republican: Mark Kirk of Illinois. Democrats Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Joe Donnelly of Indiana and Joe Manchin of West Virginia opposed him; all hail from red states where the gun lobby is particularly powerful.

Republicans have strongly opposed him not only because of his gun-control views but because of what they say are his lack of qualifications for the job and past political involvement. Murthy was the founder of Doctors for Obama, a group that backed the president’s 2008 campaign.

Roll Call described Kirk’s vote as a betrayal of the NRA.

Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., defied the National Rifle Association to confirm Vivek Murthy as surgeon general.

The Murthy confirmation was delayed for months due to opposition by the NRA and most Republicans, primarily over his support for gun control measures. But Kirk’s vote helped put him over the top with a 51 to 43 vote Monday.

Kirk’s move comes as he seeks to moderate his voting record in the run-up to 2016 given that he will be a top target for Democrats in a blue state.

His office didn’t immediately respond to questions about Kirk’s vote.

Kirks’ vote in favor of Murthy was naked self-interest in hopes of being reelected in 2016 as a moderate.

We don’t need this kind of “friend” of gun rights in Illinois… or anywhere else. The Illinois Republican Party needs to find a viable candidate to primary Kirk, and perhaps the Illinois State Rifle Association needs to take a key roll in helping drive that nomination.

Murthy has very limited medical experience, and his only real “qualifications” for the position have been his rabid political advocacy for Obamacare and the President’s political campaigns, and his pathological hatred of firearms.

Murthy hopes to argue that “gun violence” is a public health issue, which seems to be President Obama’s primary reason for nominating him for the position.

The office of Surgeon General is mostly symbolic, but it is a platform that can help shape public debate by deciding which public health issues remain on the public’s radar.

With multiple organizations being funded by billionaires with armed guards crawling out from under their rocks, this casts another “wink” their way that the Obama Administration has their backs when it comes to fighting against law-abiding citizens who choose to protect themselves with firearms.

McAuliffe Wants to Bring Back Handgun Restriction in Virginia

Support for guns in homes at all-time high in America

December 16, 2014 BY: Brent Scher

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D.) announced on Monday that he will seek to reinstate a restriction on gun sales that limits individuals in the state to one handgun purchase a month.

The law was repealed during the previous administration of Gov. Bob McDonnell (R.).

McAuliffe’s request for the Republican-dominated legislature to reinstate the law is likely to fall on deaf ears, according to a report by Reuters.

McAuliffe announced plans for multiple other restrictions on gun owners, such as a requirement for private vendors at gun shows to run background checks, and to revoke concealed carry permits from parents who are delinquent on child support payments, according to the report.

Opponents of the proposed laws say that McAuliffe is obligated to take up the fight against gun rights due to the campaign contributions he got from former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg and his anti-gun group Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

The head of a Virginia gun-rights group called the move political payback to former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, an ardent gun-control activist who was a major donor to McAuliffe’s 2013 gubernatorial campaign.

“I think this is all politically motivated,” said Philip Van Cleave, president of the Virginia Citizens Defense League, a gun rights group. “If anything, Virginia is more pro-gun than it was last year.”

The announcement from McAuliffe comes at a time when public support for gun rights in America is at an all-time high. Support has nearly doubled in the past decade, with a Gallup poll last month finding that more than six in ten Americans believe that “guns make homes safer.”

Virginia Governor Proposes Stricter Gun Laws, Longtime Clinton pal McAuliffe marks two-year anniversary of Sandy Hook by calling for stricter gun control

12.16.2014 by Bradford Thomas

Democrat Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced Monday his proposals for stricter gun control laws in the state, including limiting the number of guns a citizen can purchase in a month to one, ramping up background checks, and preventing the purchase of guns by those convicted of various offenses.

In his announcement Monday, longtime Clinton pal McAuliffe said that his position as governor required him to ensure the “health and safety” of Virginians and that the country had seen too many tragedies resulting from guns not to act:

“As governor, there is no greater responsibility than ensuring the health and safety of the citizens I serve. Our commonwealth and our nation have seen too many tragedies as a result of dangerous weapons getting into the hands of the wrong people. These common-sense proposals will keep guns out of the hands of criminals, will keep our communities safe, and will help to build a new Virginia economy.”

McAuliffe is proposing bringing back a 1990s law preventing the purchase of more than one gun per month, intensifying background checks for purchases at gun shows, and preventing the purchase of guns by those convicted of domestic violence, sexual battery, or stalking.

McAuliffe is also supporting a proposal to revoke concealed carry permits from any who fall behind on child support payments. The governor’s office said that currently 8,889 parents in Virginia with concealed handgun permits are delinquent on child support payments, owing nearly $16 million to the state collectively. The new proposal would thus revoke nearly nine thousand Virginians’ concealed-carry permits immediately.

As TheBlaze notes, McAuliffe’s gun show background check proposal is similar to that of the Obama administration’s proposal which failed in the Democrat-controlled Senate in 2013. McAuliffe is asking for an additional $100,000 to be added to his budget to place Virginia State Police at every gun show to perform the “voluntary” checks.

During McAuliffe’s gubernatorial campaign in 2013, Hillary Clinton made her first campaign appearance in almost five years to stump for her old friend, saying, “There are times when none of us can sit on the sidelines.” Though candidate McAuliffe generally avoided the issue of gun control in 2013, with his announcement Monday he’s made clear that he doesn’t intend to “sit on the sidelines” when it comes to gun policies and ensuring the “health and protection” of Virginians.
