Since the early 2000s, Americans have treated the day as the beginning of Christmas season when major shopping take place.

Most retailers open even during the night to meet the high demand from shoppers. Due to promotional sales, most people get to the shopping centers to buy clothes and gifts for Christmas festive season. Despite not being a public holiday, some states, such as California, treat Black Friday like a holiday for the government employees.
