There will be major disruption to train services on Sunday 18th September, as all lines will be closed between Reading and Swindon, also Reading and Oxford. Trains will be retimed and diverted, and rail replacement buses and coaches will be in operation for part or all of many journeys.

Great Western Railway

London Paddington - Bristol Temple Meads

Normal service on Saturday.

There will be major changes on Sunday, as all lines will be closed between Reading and Swindon.

Trains will operate to a revised timetable and will be diverted via alternative routes, with extended journey times. Rail replacement buses and coaches will be in operation for many journeys.

London Paddington - South Wales

There are major changes to services between London Paddington/Reading and South Wales this weekend.

A special timetable will operate, as not only will the Severn Tunnel be closed, but all lines will also be closed in the Newport area.

A special train service will operate on Saturday and Sunday between London Paddington, Reading and Bristol Parkway. On Sunday this will also be diverted due to the closure of all lines between Reading and Swindon.

Rail replacement buses and coaches will operate between Bristol Parkway, Newport and Cardiff Central. At most times there will be non-stop coaches between Bristol Parkway and Cardiff Central and v.v., and separate buses and coaches for Newport, so please ensure you join the correct vehicle.

A shuttle train service will operate between Cardiff Central and Swansea.

London Paddington - Cheltenham Spa

Normal service on Saturday.

A special service will operate on Sunday as all lines will be closed between Reading and Swindon. Rail replacement buses and coaches will be in operation for some journeys.

London Paddington - Devon and Cornwall

Normal service on Saturday. This route is open on Sunday, but some trains will be retimed as diverted trains will also be using this route.

London Paddington - Worcester & Hereford

Normal service on Saturday.

On Sunday, the line will be closed between Reading, Oxford and Hanborough and rail replacement buses and coaches will be in operation.
A revised train service will operate between Hanborough and Worcester/Hereford.

Reading - Basingstoke and Bedwyn

Normal service on Saturday.

On Sunday, a revised timetable will operate between Reading and Bedwyn as diverted trains will also be using this route.

On Sunday, the first two return journeys between Reading and Basingstoke (07.37 & 08.37 from Reading and 08.07 & 09.07 from Basingstoke) will be operated instead by rail replacement buses, these will leave some stations EARLIER than usual.

Reading - Gatwick Airport

Normal service on Saturday.

On Sunday, buses will replace trains between Reigate and Redhill/Gatwick Airport.

London Paddington - Reading - Oxford & Thames Valley Branches

A revised timetable will operate all weekend due to Crossrail-related work in the London area. Also on Sunday all lines will be closed between Reading and Oxford and rail replacement buses will be in operation.

On Saturday, the Greenford branch will operate as a shuttle to and from West Ealing only. Also no trains will stop at Acton Main Line; rail tickets will be accepted on the Underground Central Line between Ealing Broadway and North Acton, and on any reasonable alternative bus service in the area.

Trains will not call at Pangbourne from 22.40 on Saturday night, a rail replacement bus will operate from Tilehurst.

There are no planned closures at Burnham and Taplow this weekend.

Midweek changes Monday 19th - Friday 23rd September

A revised timetable will be in operation between London Paddington and South Wales, due to the closure of the Severn Tunnel until Friday 21st October. An hourly service will operate between London Paddington, Cardiff Central and Swansea; the journey will take around 30 minutes longer than usual and some departures will be earlier than usual. A separate hourly service will operate on weekdays between London Paddington and Bristol Parkway.

Note the last departure for Newport and Cardiff on Mondays to Fridays during the closure period is at 22.45 from London Paddington and 23.13 from Reading - the 23.30 departure from London Paddington terminates at Bristol with no onward connection.

Reading-Bedwyn: buses will replace trains from 21.20 on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday nights until close of service.

Pangbourne: trains will not call from 21.30 on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday nights until 05.15 the next morning; and from 23.30 Friday night (23rd) until 05.30 Saturday morning. A rail replacement bus will operate to and from Tilehurst.

There are no planned weekday closures at Burnham and Taplow this week.

South West Trains (Reading-London Waterloo)

Normal service on Saturday.

On Sunday, all lines in the Twickenham area will be closed. Trains between Reading and London Waterloo will be diverted via, and call additionally at, Hounslow. Change at Hounslow for rail replacement buses to and from Twickenham and Richmond.

Rail replacement buses will also operate on Sunday between Virginia Water and Weybridge, and between Twickenham and Teddington. A revised train service will operate between Windsor & Eton Riverside and London Waterloo, via Hounslow, and a shuttle train service will operate between Richmond and London Waterloo.

All other SWT routes are unaffected by engineering work this weekend, except for some services in the Salisbury area before 09.30 on Sunday morning.

Cross Country Trains via Reading

Normal service on Saturday, except there will be no Cross Country Trains services operating north of Newcastle. Alternative train services will operate between Newcastle and Edinburgh via a diversionary route. Intermediate stations will be served by rail replacement buses and coaches.

On Sunday, the lines will be closed between Reading and Banbury and the following special service will operate:

- Revised hourly train service between Bournemouth and Reading
- Rail replacement bus and coach services between Reading, Oxford and Banbury
- Hourly train service between Banbury, Birmingham New Street and Manchester Piccadilly
- Change at Birmingham New Street for services to and from the East Midlands, North East England and Scotland
Note: there will be no Cross Country services operating north of Newcastle on Sunday. Alternative trains will operate between Newcastle and Edinburgh via a diversionary route, with intermediate stations served by rail replacement bus services.
