The four ‘somethings’ in this quaint old fashioned rhyme is practically synonymous with weddings, and probably something you’ve heard all your life but particularly since you got engaged!

But do you know what it really means?

It’s all about receiving good luck into your new married life. Something we all wish and hope for on our wedding day.

Like most brides, you probably have a good idea what you’d like to use for your four ‘somethings’, however did you know about our unique Blue Stone?

2016 marks our 30th Anniversary of trading as designers, hand crafters and colouring experts of satin footwear and handbags.

As such our name is well known throughout the trade as a mark of quality and excellence. In order to continue to ensure this well-deserved reputation, we have added a blue crystal stone to the centre of the ‘o’ in Rainbow on all our Rainbow Club and Rainbow Couture styles of shoes as a mark of authenticity.

This choice is also a direct nod to the rich bridal history of the company and links to this well-known poem.

So if you are unsure what to use for your ‘something blue’, your Rainbow Club wedding shoes will automatically tick this one off your list for you.

Something Old, Something New… Traditional meanings:

The something ‘Old’ and ‘Blue’ is traditionally to do with avoiding the gaze of the ‘evil eye’ which is reputed to make women barren – eek!

The something ‘Borrowed’ is (apparently!) traditionally underwear from a close friend or family member who has had children in order to help improve fertility. Not something generally done these days!

Something ‘New’ is meant to represent new optimism for the future, so although there isn’t a specific item for this, it’s nice to have something in mind for crossing this ‘something’ off your list (most brides use their wedding dress, shoes or accessories).

The Silver Sixpence is used to encourage prosperity and good fortunate on the couple for the rest of their married lives.

A lot of these ‘somethings’ can be combined in one item. Such as a new wedding shoe’s (with our blue stone of excellence of course), or an old borrowed sixpence. If you choose to follow with this particular tradition, it’s a lot of fun working out what your items could be and how you integrate them into your wedding day.
