Welcome to Blog Profiles! Each week, PR Newswire selects an industry or subject and a handful of sites that do a good job with promoting and contributing to the conversation. Do you have a blog that deserves recognition? Tweet to us! Tell Blog Profiles writers Christine Cube and Mary Johnson why on @BeyondBylines.

There’s a new job at the Smithsonian Institution that’s taking up some space on my Facebook newsfeed.

The Smithsonian is looking for a beer expert – someone who can travel and research American craft beer.

Naturally, my friends are talking about it. So that gave me the idea for this week’s blog profiles.

Appellation Beer celebrates “beer from a place.”

Place matters.

Says blogger Stan Hieronymus, place speaks to “the ingredients used, where they came from, how brewers allow the where to influence their beers, the brewers themselves, where beer was/is consumed — is part of that.”

Some interesting posts include That dream beer job? There’s a job element, Beer ingredients in 2020: What about barley?, Hops: A hundred year trend reversed, and Beer for wine drinkers.

The Barley Blog features mostly beer reviews, as well as sections on Virginia beer, Maryland beer, and DC beer.

That was a neat discovery – to learn that there’s a bunch of interesting craft beer happening all around me.

The Barley Blog originally was started as a way to keep track of the incredible beer that was being consumed by the blog owner (who remains anonymous).

“That was back in December of 2006 (even though I had been drinking craft beer for much longer),” they write. “A whole lot has changed since then. The craft beer revolution is pretty much main stream now with breweries popping up at an ever increasing rate (some good, some not so much).”

Some posts that caught my eye include Review: Cascade Brewing Blackcap Raspberry, Review: Otter Creek Couch Surfer, and Review: Jailbreak Brewing Big Punisher.

Vinography is a wine blog that chronicles wine and food adventures in San Francisco and around the world.

The blog began Jan. 2004, as a personal project for founder Alder Yarrow.

“Featuring wine and sake reviews, restaurant reviews, editorials, book reviews, wine news, and wine event coverage, Vinography publishes new content daily to a global readership,” the blog says.

Several posts on Vinography got my attention. They include I’ll Drink to That: Winemaker Marco Tinessa of Ognostro Winery, Chillin’ Out in Coombsville, Napa’s Last Secret Terroir, Wine Will Never Smell the Same Again: Luca Turin and the Science of Scent, and I’ll Drink to That: Mariel Wega of a.kitchen + bar, Philadelphia.

L’occasion is the blog of wine storyteller Jill Barth.

This is an incredibly attractive site. It also was awarded two Wine Blog Awards: Best Overall and Best Writing.

Notable posts include Winemaker Rendezvous: Bernard Duseigneur of Domaine Duseigneur, Why We are Drinking Now: A Médoc Beauty, and What Your Madre Never Told You About Orange Wines.
