Continuing the series of Global brands that we identify with, in this post I will write about three global brands. I have taken these brand stories from my my new blog Life11.  The brand stories were written for the #AtoZChallenge.

The focus today is mainly on technology and Information Technology.

Google

Founded in 1998, by Larry Page and Sergey Bin, Google has literally shaped up our internet experience. So used we are to searching things on Google that life without Google is unthinkable now for any internet user.

Google’s core competency lies in creating sophisticated internet search algorithms.

When internet was expanding rapidly in the mid-nineties, Google developed the PageRank search algorithm that returned better results than any other search engine at the time.

Investing thousands of person-years into enhancing their search capability, Google created algorithms that competitors such as Microsoft or Yahoo have not been able to imitate.

With most Internet users using Google for search, Google started selling advertising space in conjunction with key words, and then proceeded on to develop a host of other winning applications such as Google docs, Google Maps, Google Earth.

What’s next for Google? Maybe self-driving cars, Google fiber, Google Now, or electronics!

Honda

The world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer was established in Sept 24, 1948, by Soichiro Honda, in Itaya-cho, Hamamatsu, Japan.

Faced with limited opportunities in Japan, post World War II, right from the beginning, the company looked outwards to appeal to the customers worldwide.

Setting up its own subsidiaries and creating production facilities in US , Europe and Asia, back in the nineteen sixties and seventies, Honda became a truly global brand, fueling the power of dreams of its customers around the world.

The brand slogan for Honda is “The Power of Dreams”.

With its reputation for creating and improving winning models, Honda is seen as an environmental automobile, a comfortable, fun-to-drive car and a Best Value brand.

IBM

Known as Big Blue, IBM was founded in 1911, in New York, US, through a merger of three companies – Tabulating Machine Company, the International Time Recording Company, and the Computing Scale Company.

IBM’s story is that of transition, adaptation and reinvention.

Starting as a computing, tabulating & recording company, IBM became a world-class computer company by investing in mainframes in the late 1940s. It led the world market in making computers by 1955, moved to PCs in 1980s, and eventually transformed into a complete IT solution provider to businesses.

I Think, Therefore IBM

The tag line in response to Apple’s ‘Think Different” reflected an interesting way of thinking.

The company that has reinvented itself time and again, now faces stiff competition again, with Microsoft, Amazon Web Services and Google competing in the cloud computing and infrastructure space, and with the emergence of agile firms that innovate continuously.

Maybe it’s time to THINK about more transitions at IBM.
