North America’s largest street festival, as well as the continent’s largest gathering of Black people, the Toronto Caribbean Carnival, affectionately referred to as Caribana, is a dazzling celebration of Caribbean culture rooted in a radical history of resistance. Telesur

If Proft’s name sounds familiar, well, he’s the Chicago radio talk-show host who is also chairman and treasurer of Liberty Principles Political Action Committee, which spent more than $3 million this spring in an unsuccessful try to defeat state Sen. Sam McCann, R-Plainview, who took some pro-union votes abhorred by Republican Gov.Bruce Rauner.

Rauner on June 16 personally donated $2.5 million to Liberty Principles — though the PAC is not involved with the newspapers, and the governor is not funding them, Proft said. One person Proft is working with on the papers is Brian Timpone, who once ran a company called Journatic that got in journalistic trouble for things including providing content to U.S. newspapers using writers in the Philippines who sometimes used fake names. A third Chicago cop involved in the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old man Thursday night in South Shore has been “relieved of his police powers” by Supt. Eddie Johnson after an autopsy showed the dead man was shot in the back, a police spokesman said Saturday.

The other two officers who fired at Paul O’Neal in the 7300 block of South Merrill Avenue were reassigned to administrative duty late Friday, with police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi saying it “appears that departmental policies may have been violated.

Autopsy results released Saturday showed O’Neal, whose shooting is under investigation by the city’s Independent Police Review Authority, died of a gunshot wound to the back. The Cook County medical examiner’s office ruled the death a homicide. SunTimes

“Before enacting that law, the legislature requested data on the use, by race, of a number of voting practices. Upon receipt of the race data, the General Assembly enacted legislation that restricted voting and registration in five different ways, all of which disproportionately affected African Americans. Although the new provisions target African Americans with almost surgical precision, they constitute inapt remedies for the problems assertedly justifying them and, in fact, impose cures for problems that did not exist.” Fourth Circuit Court of appeals, which on Friday delivered its decision on the challenge to the heinous voter-suppression law passed by the state legislature of North Carolina. Speaking for the court’s majority wasJudge Diana Gribbon Motz.
