United Airlines: Cheap Flights, Big Restrictions

United Airlines is the latest in a slew of carriers to impose some pretty tight restrictions on those looking for a good deal on air travel. In an effort to compete with budget airlines such as Allegiant, Spirit and Virgin, the airline is offering sub-economy tickets, or “basic economy,” to travelers on a tight budget.

The catch? Travelers will not be issued a seat until the date they are traveling and will be among the last group to board. People who are traveling together may be split up for the flight, and sub-economy passengers are limited to just one carry-on bag that must fit under the seat—no access to  accommodation in the overhead bins.

Additionally, basic economy customers will not be able to use their miles toward elite status, upgrade to economy plus or premium cabins and they will not be able to change their ticket or get refunds 24 hours after booking.

Are you a United Airlines customer? Will you welcome the new basic economy tickets or do you think it’s just a marketing spin on stripping services and boosting profits? Tell us in the comments below!
