Step 1

Open the model image in photoshop and duplicate (Ctrl+J) the image two times. We can name the duplicates as we want. I, myself, named the duplicates as background copy and inverted background copy 2. NOTE: the original model image is quite large with size of 2304 x 3456 at 300 pxls/inch. We can reduce the the image size to 768 x 1152 at 100 pxls/inch. The psd file of this tutorial that we can download here is the one with the reduced size as mentioned above. There will be some different setting for certain filters used because of the reduction as we can see in the psd file.

Step 2

Select the inverted background copy 2 layer in the layer panel and hit Ctrl+I to invert the layer.

With the layer still selected, go to Layer > Smart Objects > Convert to Smart Object. This will change the layer into a smart object later indicated by a small smart object thumbnail at lower left corner..

Then, change this smart object layer’s blending option from normal to overlay at 100% opacity.

The result should look like this:

Step 3

In this step, we will give some high pass filter for the smart object layer by going to Filter > Others > High Pass.

Here is the setting of the high pass filter. After applying this filter, it will be a smart filter shown below the smart layer with a white mask thumbnail. Note: the amount of the high pass filter shown in the screenshot is the one for the image with original size (2304 x3456 pxl at 300 resolution). If we reduce the resolution to 100 pxls/inchs (a third of 300), we should set the amount of the filter to 11,5 pxl (a third of 34,5). This will give the same result.

Give this layer a layer mask by clicking the layer mask icon in the bottom of the layer panel.

Then, mask the areas around the eyes, nose, lips and upper hair as shown in the selection in the screenshot. Use a very soft round brush at 20% opacity for this purpose.

Next, select the mask thumbnail of the high pass smart filter and mask some areas on the model’s face and hair.

Here is the result we should have:

Step 4

Activate the elliptical marquee tool and set the feather for this tool at 10 px.

Then activate the background copy layer in the layer panel and make a round selection on the eye of the model with the elliptical marquee tool. Make sure to hit Shift+Alt on the keyboard while clicking, holding and dragging the tool to create the selection.

After creating selection, hit Ctrl+J to duplicate the selection into a new single layer above the background copy layer in the layer panel. I named this layer right eye. We need to move this layer to the top most position. To do this purpose, click, hold and drag the layer to the top most position of the layer orders (above the inverted background copy 2 layer). Finally, convert this right eye layer to a smart object.

With the right eye smart object still activated, go to Image > adjustments > variations.

Start to alter the color of the eye by clicking the color option given. Try to give more blue tone to the eye by clicking more blue option several times, add a bit greenish tone by clicking the more green option a few times. Finally, give some highlight by clicking the lighter option. After altering the color with desired color, save the setting of the variation in any folder in our PC and click OK.

Then, we need to reduce the opacity of the eye color to make it blended well. Right click on the variation smart filter and choose Smart Filter Blending Option. Set the opacity to 40%

Here is the result.

Proceed to give the same color to the other eye. Use the setting of variation smart filter previously saved by loading it to photoshop.

Step 5

Create a new layer (Shift+Ctrl+N). I named this layer smudged skin.

Activate the smudge tool in the tool panel.

Try to choose a very soft round brush for the tool. Set its strength to 52 and check sample all layers

Start to smudge some areas around the model’s face as shown in the selection in the screenshot:

Here is the result I created:

Step 6

In this step we will create eye make up to enhance the look of the eyes. Take pen tool in the tool panel (P). Start to trace the eye areas by clicking the tool to make some anchor point. Make sure to click, hold and drag the anchor point if we want to curve the path. When the path is closed, right click on the path to show the path command option. Choose Make Path Selection, this will change the path into a selection.

Set the feather radius to 2 for the selection.

Step 7

Then after making the selection, go to Layer > New Adjustment Layers > Hue/Saturation

There will be a hue/saturation layer with a layer mask. Set the adjustment layer to the setting as in the screenshot.

Finally, set this hue/saturation layer to overlay blending at 44% opacity.

Step 8

Proceed to create another selection around the eye.

Then, give this selection some color by adding a hue/saturation as in the previous step. Set the setting for this adjustment layer as the one shown in the screenshot.

For this adjustment layer, set it to overlay at 100% opacity.

Step 9

Do the same way to give make up for the other eye.

Here is the result

Step 10

Select all the hue/saturation layers and then hit Ctrl+G to group then in a folder. I named this folder as eye make up. Give this group layer a layer mask.

Then, mask the color of the eye make up that overlap to the model’s hair.

Step 11

In this step, we will proceed to add eyelashes for the model. Make sure we have install the eyelashbrushes in photoshop. Create a new layer. Activate the brush tool and choose one of the eyelash brush. Set the size to fit the eye.

With black color, paint the eyelash to the model eye on this new layer. Rearrange its position to fit the eye by rotating it a bit. I named this layer eyelash.

With the eyelash layer selected, click the layer style icon in the bottom of the layer panel.

Give this eyelash inner glow layer style:

Step 12

Duplicate the eyelash layer. Then, with the duplicate layer still selected, go to edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal. Rearrange the position to fit the eye.

Step 13

Create another new layer below the previous eyelash layers. Take the other eyelash brush. On the new layer, paint the eyelash with black color.

Set the opacity to 50% for this eyelash.

Step 14

Do the same way to add more eyelash to the other eye.

Step 15

Next, create again a new layer and take the lower eyelash brush. On this new layer, paint the lower eyelash.

Set the opacity for this lower eyelash to 66%.

Duplicate the lower eyelash. Flip the duplicate horizontally and place it to the other eye. Set it to normal blending at 76% opacity.

Step 16

Proceed to do retouching to the model’s lips. We use the same way of how colorizing the eye in previous step 7 and 8. Make sure to set the amount of the hue/saturation as the one in the screenshot below. Set the adjustment layer to normal blending at 50% opacity.

Next, duplicate the hue/saturation layer two times. Set the first duplicate to overlay blending at 73% opacity and the second to overlay at 30% opacity. Here is the result will look:

Step 17

Open the other stock image in photoshop. Take the pen tool again and trace the model by clicking the entire edges of it to create path. When the path is closed, right click on the path to show the path command option box. Choose Make Path Selection and set 1pxl for the feather of the selection. After the model is selected, hit Ctrl+J to duplicate the selection into a single layer.

Proceed to clean out the face of the model.

Step 18

Add the image to the main document. We need to scale its size to fit the face of the model. Use free transform tool to do this purpose by hitting Ctrl+T to activate the tool. To scale the image, press the Shift key on the keyboard while clicking, holding and dragging one of the transforming points

Click the warp icon to activate the Warp tool and then alter the shape of the robe by warping it to fit the model head.

Here is the result so far.

Step 19

We need to fix the shape of the upper part of the robe. To do this purpose, cut out the upper part of the robe and alter the shape of the cut out by warping.

Give the cut out layer a layer mask and mask the unwanted parts as shown in the selection.

Here is the result should be

Step 20

Duplicate the cut out layer and flip the duplicate horizontally. Place the duplicate where needed.

Mask the unneeded part of the duplicate. Finally, select all the robe layers and then hit Ctrl+E to merge them into a single layer. I named this new layer merged robe. Here is the model should look so far.

Step 21

We need to add some shadow under the robe. Create a new layer below the merged robe layer. Take the brush tool. Choose a very soft round brush set to 10-20 pxl. On the new layer, paint the shadow by stroking the brush with black on the areas indicated by red arrows in the screenshot.

Here is the result I created.

Step 22

Next, create a new hue/saturation adjustment layer above the merged layer and give this adjustment layer a clipping mask by checking the Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask.

Here is the setting of the hue/adjustment layer:

Step 23

Create a new layer above the hue/saturation layer. Make sure to give this new layer a clipping mask, set the blending to overlay and fill with overlay neutral color (50% gray).

Take the dodge tool in the tool panel. Set the tool to highlight for the range at about 15-20% exposure and choose a very soft round brush for the tool.

On the new layer, start to give some highlight to the robe by stroking the tool on some areas. Try to alternate to the burn tool to give some shadow as well:

Step 24

Now we need to clean out the background of the scene. Select the background copy layer and give this layer a layer mask. Clean out the background by masking it.

Step 25

Next we need to give the scene a new background. We will use the cosmos images for this purpose. Start to add one of the cosmos image under the background copy layer. With the free transform tool, scale the size of the image to fit the scene.

Then, duplicate the cosmos background two times. Set the first duplicate to multiply blending at 100% opacity and the second to color dodge blending at 100% opacity. The result should look like this:

Step 26

Add another cosmos image above all the other cosmos background previously created.

Mask the unneeded part of this second cosmos layer and set its blending to screen at 100% opacity

Step 27

Now in this step we will set the overall adjustment to the scene by giving the scene a new adjustment layer: vibrance below the shadow layer. Set the vibrance layer to the amount as the one shown in the screenshot and keep it to normal blending at 100% opacity.

Duplicate the vibrance layer and set the duplicate to normal at 100% opacity. Here is the result should look.

Step 28

Give another new adjustment layer above the vibrance layer. This time we will add hue/saturation for the adjustment layer and set the amount of the adjustment as shown in the screenshot. Mask some areas on the eyes and lips for this layer. Set this layer to normal blending at 100% opacity.

Duplicate the hue/saturation layer and set the duplicate to multiply at 100% opacity. Mask some area on the face areas a bit

Finally, duplicate the hue/saturation layer once again and set this duplicate to screen blending at 50% opacity.

Step 29

Open the cosmos image again (the one used in creating the background in the previous step). Place this cosmos image above all the other layers in the layer panel. Scale its size and arrange its position in such way that the glowing planet of the image is in front of the model’s chest. Mask the unnecessary part of it. Set this layer blending to screen at 100% opacity.

Duplicate the cosmos layer two times. Set the first duplicate to screen blending mode at 100% opacity and the second one to overlay blending at 100% opacity. The result should like this one below

Step 30

Then, we will set the two other adjustments to the entire scene. Firstly, we give photo filter adjustment layer set as the screenshot below. Keep this adjustment layer to normal at 100% opacity.

Now for the second adjustment, we will give gradient map adjustment layer. We will use one of the default gradients in the gradient presets is that the Violet, Orange Gradient. Set this gradient adjustment layer to soft light at 20% opcity.

This is the result so far…

Step 31

Create a new layer above the adjustment layers. Take the brush tool and choose soft round brush set to 75-80% hardness. On this layer, paint a white half circle shape on the planet. I named this layer orb.

And here is the result after covering the planet:

Step 32

Finally, hit Shift+Ctrl+Alt+E to stamp all the other layer into a new single later. Convert this stamp layer to smart object. Then, go to Filter > Others > Custom with the following setting.

Select the filter thumbnail mask and mask the background area and parts on the model’s face to hide the effect of the custom filter. That’s it,..we are done. Here is the result:
