The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) Wins Digital Innovations Award

Congratulations to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) in recognition of its patient provider location service (PPLS), an innovative technology that manages ambulatory patient flow to improve patient care, patient engagement, and operations efficiency.

The PPLS will be used primarily in CHOP’s Buerger Center for Advanced Pediatric Care, located on the Raymond G. Perelman Campus—a state-of-the-art, Silver LEED-certified building dedicated to providing the ideal patient experience. The 12-story building offers spacious waiting rooms for families that feature “Wait. Play. Learn.” areas, a multipurpose roof garden used for rehabilitation sessions, and a building-wide “Children in Motion” theme to promote activity and help patients navigate their way around the center. The Buerger Center is the latest addition to CHOP, which was founded in 1855 as the nation’s first pediatric hospital. Since then, it has grown to a 535-bed hospital, providing exceptional patient care, training new generations of pediatric healthcare professionals, and pioneering major research initiatives to benefit children worldwide.

The PPLS is one-of-a-kind—CHOP is the only hospital implementing this new Ambulatory tracking method. When an employee or patient moves throughout the center, Centrak, a tagging and tracking technology, will track interactions between patients and staff, and send warnings when someone has not been contacted in a specific period of time. In addition, nurses now have the ability to monitor their staff and patients by using either a list or map view option. The map view uses the proprietary technology APIC to represent each patient or staff member as its own icon, which makes it easier to tell the difference between staff and patient.

Additionally, CHOP has also implemented colored lights above the doors of all patient rooms to help improve privacy and operations, tell the cleaning staff when a patient has left the room, and relay information back to the nursing staff once the room has been cleaned. When needed, this system can also provide real-time analytics, which display the efficiency of staff and patient engagement.
