Superbowl week equals a slow news week for the San Francisco Giants. A few other teams decided to use the week to add some veteran relief pitchers that were still on the free agent market. The Giants seem content with their current bullpen arms heading into Spring Training. But the longer these vets remained unsigned, the more intrigued San Francisco could become.

Just this week, the Toronto Blue Jays signed the right-handed Joe Smith and the left-handed J.P. Howell. The New York Mets also made a pair of signings. They decided to bring Jerry Blevins and Fernando Salas back on a pair of one-year deals. Even the Cleveland Indians were in on the action when they signed lefty reliever Boone Logan. The week finished up with long-time Giant relief pitcher, Sergio Romo, signing with the rival Los Angeles Dodgers.

Romo joined the Giants back in 2008. Since then, he went 32-26 and saved 84 games. His career earned run average is 2.58, with a 10.2 strikeouts per nine innings rate. Romo was a part of all three recent World Series Championships, one in which he was their closer. It was time for a change, but his fiery spirit will be missed by his teammates and the Giants’ fans. While Romo’s regular season was on par with with his career numbers this year, he struggled in the postseason. In two appearances against the World Champion Chicago Cubs, Romo allowed three runs in just two innings pitched.

The quiet week for San Francisco, in regards to the run of bullpen arms finding homes, says a lot about the direction of their pitching staff, indicating they believe in newly signed closer, Mark Melancon. The rest of their staff has definitely earned the respect of the organization.  This revamped bullpen will be a key to the Giants success this season.
