Newly-instated Glasgow Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha has branded the Gers as the biggest club in Scotland during his first interview since arriving at the Ibrox Stadium.

The 46-year-old, who was in the stands watching-on as seasoned defender Clint Hill netted an 87th minute equaliser for the visitors to rescue a point at Parkhead in the Old Firm derby on Sunday, joined the Scottish Premier League side from Qatari club Al-Gharafa.

Caretaker-boss Graeme Murty was in the dugout for the 1-1 draw, but the Portuguese unknown stepped into his first day at the office on Monday – and instantly issued a rally-cry to his new team.

“It’s a massive club. It’s the biggest club in Scotland. It’s one club that is fighting again, to get on top,” Caixinha told RangersTV.

“We know that we are going to get on the top and that’s what we are here for.”

The league title is already unsalvageable for the former-goalkeeper this campaign – with the unbeaten Celtic 25 points ahead of second-placed Aberdeen – and a further eight in-front of Rangers.

But the new man will get a taste of his first all-Glasgow clash, as well as an opportunity to compete for silverware when the Old Firm collide again in the Scottish Cup semi-final next month.

“We are in the cup semi-final so we need to think about winning that trophy”, the 46-year-old added.

“We need to be ambitious, but you need to be realistic at the same time.

“But I think we are being totally ambitious and realistic in saying that we would like to end up in second position and why not get the trophy out of the Scottish Cup.”

Caixinha will not be expected to perform miracles but to prepare his side for next season, and mould a squad fit enough to challenge their bitter rivals for the Scottish Premier League title in years to come.
