A “lone hacker” assumed responsibility for a cyber attack on the U.S. Democratic National Committee (DNC).

The DNC and the CrowdStrike cyber firm said Russian hackers broke into the organizations intranet, stealing among other things research on the Republican presumptive nominee Donald Trump; they also were able to go through all the chat and mail traffic, Washington Post revealed on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, a hacker using the pseudonym Guccifer 2.0 and claimed responsibility on Wednesday with a post on WorldPress.com, with the DNC report on Trump, to prove his claim.  The company stand by the claim that the Russian government was behind the attack, although the DNC has yet to comment or verify the authenticity of the documents.

The hacker’s name – Guccifer 2.0 – is an allusion to another hacker that is known as Marcel Lazăr Lehel. Lahel is a notorious hacker who in May 2016 pleaded guilty to unauthorized access to personal email and social media accounts of two former U.S. presidents, a former member of the U.S. Cabinet, a former member of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff and a former presidential advisor. That former member of Parliament is Hillary Clinton.

Whoever is Guccifer 2.0, he has made clear that the data stolen from the DNC will be passed on to WikiLeaks for publication.
