Child rights activists said on Sunday that the government’s claim of a ‘Developed Bangladesh’ appeared unfounded when crimes against children kept on occurring.
At a human-chain formed in front of the National Press Club, the campaigners demanded comprehensive steps to uproot violence against children.
They said they were tired of analyzing statistics of such crimes in presence of a number of preventive laws.
Child Rights Advocacy Coalition in Bangladesh, a platform of 10 national and international non-government organizations, formed the human-chain.
The human chain programme was sponsored on the backdrop of recent waves of crimes, committed against the children across the country.
Attending the protest programme, Citizens for Good Governance secretary Badiul Alam Majumdar said a standard national development policy always focuses on marginalised communities, women and children and ensure protection of their lives.
Ain O Salish Kendra representative Nargis Akter demanded collaborative actions by the government and the rights bodies to protect women and children.
Activists Nasima Akhter, Mamunur Rashid, Sabrina Sultana, Ishaque Miah addressed the human chain, among others, while representatives from Save the Children, Action Aid Bangladesh, ASK, Child Rights Governance Assembly, Education and Development Foundation, National Girl Child Advocacy Forum, BSAF, Plan International Bangladesh and World Vision Bangladesh, were also present.
