I am very happy with Irene being back in her dragon form, not only does it have a strong design, but it kinda signaled that she was going all in to finish this quick. I personally believe it’s absurd she should have to against an injured Erza, but it is what it is. Irene’s characterization does not get helped by this chapter at all really. I know some may say that she is this way due to what happened to her in the flashback, and that’s all well and good if not for the fact that this is the norm for fairy tail.
A screaming whining villain that has extreme dialogue to match the nakama speech right on queue. Her backstory as I have said before was solid, especially by fairy tail standards, but you would be hard pressed to deny that she has acted much different from the norm apart from that.
The fight is far too predictable, and the parts that have not been as much, accomplished nothing but getting this into a 1 vs 1 for Erza (Irene taking over Wendy’s body. The meteor being called down from Irene’s use of a more advanced enchanting magic was cool, but now Erza is flying toward it when she is even more injured, and I fully expect her to destroy this thing. I imagine Acno will come in maybe even next chapter and get his revenge on Irene. The question is will Irene have redeemed herself with Erza or not? Personally, I find it to be very likely she will. I am indifferent as I fully expect it to happen, besides if it does not her character will just be that of an interesting character turned full sadist as per the norm in fairy tail. If she does, she is just one in a long line of characters that get redeemed through fairy tail speeches and actions. It’s kinda a lose – lose, and that’s what happens when you provide such little complexity to your characters and make them black and white largely with their motivations.
