– Nigerians living in South Sudan are passing through hell presently

– They are crying out to the federal government of Nigeria to come to their rescue immediately

– This call became necessary as a result of the renewed violence in the country

Osasu Obayiuwana, a Nigerian and a lawyer posted series of tweets under the Hashtag #NigerianstrappedinSouthSudan.

In addition, Francis Agunnanya, the head of the Nigerian Community in Juba, an area in South Sudan was quoted to have said the situation of things was tense.

Agunnanya stated that South Sudanese soldiers told Nigerians living in the homes of South Sudanese to leave immediately.

“These are desperate citizens of yours. Please evacuate them; we’re desperate! Our people are stranded at the Catholic church and the Embassy. They have no food to eat,” the head of the Nigerian Community stated.

Agunnanya further said they have informed the Nigerian consul-general Rumah Yakubu about the terrible condition of Nigerians, but got a totally disappointing reply.

“We’ve spoken to Mr Rumah Yakubu, the consul-general. He asked whether anyone had died. We need to leave. Now! The response of the consul-general to our plight is very disappointing. We need to leave now,” Agunnanya said.

The twitter Hastag #NigerianstrappedinSouthSudan was created to draw the attention of President Muhammadu Buhari, the minister of foreign affairs Geoffrey Onyeama as well as the special adviser to President Buhari on Diaspora Matters Abike Dabiri. They want these people to come to their rescue

The tweets from the handle, @osasuo reads: “@ngrpresident, these are desperate citizens of yours. Please evacuate them. @abikedabiri is aware of the situation. A colleague reached her. So, what will be done by the Nigerian government?”

As a result of the appeal, the minister of foreign affairs Geoffrey Onyeama appreciated one of the tweets as Onyema replied with his own tweet which reads “@osasuo: Well noted.”

The director of public communications and spokesperson for the ministry of foreign affairs, Dr Clement Abuku revealed on Tuesday, July 12 that the foreign affairs ministry was evaluating the situation.

Abuku said the Nigerian Mission in Juba will act on the matter in the shortest possible time.

Renewed clashes broke out in the South Sudanese capital, Juba over the weekend with at least 272 people being killed who were  mostly soldiers, a health ministry source said. The fighting which caused the high number of deaths began on Thursday, July 7 when President Kiir’s troop forcefully searched vehicles of people loyal to VP Machar.

Already, the US and India have started evacuating non-emergency staff from their missions in South Sudan while Japan has ordered three C-130 military transport planes to an air base to evacuate its nationals trapped in Juba.
