The Green Party will push for changes to make it easier and less traumatic for victims of sexual assault to report their crimes.

Our justice system is broken when a 13-year-old girl complains to police that she had been raped by a gang of young men but nothing happens. The fact is very few women and girls complain because the process is so difficult.

The Law Commission, the Ministry of Justice, and former Justice Minister Simon Power, have outlined multiple ways to make the process better for victims. Several ideas have almost unanimous support of the judiciary, lawyers and sexual violence support services, ideas which Justice Minister Judith Collins has stopped work on.

We have asked Minister Collins to revisit these ideas and others by putting them back on the work agenda of the Law Commission. To show your support for our call to do this, please email her at Judith.collins@parliament.govt.nz.
