I've watched Grey's Anatomy from beginning to end SO many times it'll make your head spin. There's something I've noticed since the first time that I've watched the show & I'm surprised no one has written anything or pointed it out. We all love Shonda Rhimes for creating Grey's Anatomy; however, we also dislike her for getting rid of many of our favorite characters (McDreamy <3, Cristina etc.). It can all be a coincidence or it is her that goes along with this system, but the fact is every time someone gets married on the show someone dies and every time they divorce someone leaves the show. Some deaths on the show happen right away whereas others take some time to happen. Don't believe me? Here are the facts:

George O'Malley & Calliope Torres- Marriage & Divorce
When George married Callie, we all knew he married her because he was grieving over his father's death. This is the first marriage two deaths occur a few episodes after they got married. On Season 3 Episode 17, Meredith drowned after the ferry boat accident and was stuck in limbo. When she tries to go back, she sees her mom Ellis Grey, and realizes that her mom is dead. On Season 3 Episode 22/23, Meredith's stepmom was in the hospital after a case of hiccups which she later died of sepsis. Callie & George soon divorce after Callie knew about George's infidelity with Izzie Stevens in Season 3 & wasn't until Season 5 when Erica Hahn left the show after learning about Izzie & Denny Duquette.
Addison Montgomery & Derek Shepherd- Divorce
After Addison slept with Mark Sloan, Derek left New York where he met Meredith in a bar at Seattle. Derek never told Meredith that he was still married which caused a ripple effect when Addison makes a surprise visit at Seattle Grace Hospital. They tried to give it another shot at their marriage until Meredith & Derek did the McNasty on prom night. Addison soon realized this when Derek had Meredith's undies in his pocket of his tuxedo. They soon divorced after the incident. After their divorce, both Preston Burke & Addison Montgomery left the show after Season 3.
Isobel Stevens & Alex Karev- Marriage & Divorce
When Izzie got Cancer (Metastatic Melanoma), everyone was devastated & thought that she was going to die due to how advanced her cancer was. Meredith and Derek were supposed to get married but due to her poor diagnosis, they both decided to give their wedding to Izzie & Alex, making it a last minute romantic wedding. A few episodes after their wedding, George O'Malley dies, leaving everyone in shock after his sudden death. During the merger of Seattle Grace & Mercy West, Izzie accidentally administered an incorrect dosage to a patient, causing that patient to not get the kidney they've been waiting for & caused the Chief to fire Izzie Stevens. She later returns to try to fix things with Alex. Alex felt that he deserved to be with someone who would stay. He wanted Izzie to leave & never come back and for her to be happy, causing Izzie Stevens to be the main character to leave the show after a divorce in Season 6.
Meredith Grey & Derek Shepherd- Post it Marriage & Legal Marriage
Even though it wasn't a real marriage, I along with many Grey's Anatomy fans believe their marriage on a post-it note was very romantic. Although their marriage wasn't legal, it was still a marriage nonetheless to Meredith and Derek. They married via post it on the season 5 finale and it wasn't until season 6 when Gary Clark shot up the hospital where various doctors such as Reeds & Percy met their fate. In season 7 episode 20, Meredith and Derek officially got married in City Hall in order to adopt Zola. Everything in Seattle Grace Mercy West was fine until a plane crash in the season finale of season 8, having Lexie Grey meeting her demise.
Calliope Torres & Arizona Robbins- Marriage & Divorce
Callie and Arizona's relationship was a smooth, fun relationship but there was always a lot getting into their way. Whether it was plans for babies, a car crash, plane crash or cheating, it was not as smooth as people want to believe when you do the autopsy on this relationship. They married in the same episode as Derek and Meredith did so it is difficult to say whether their marriage led to the death of Lexie Grey or Mark Sloan. Their relationship went sour when Arizona's leg had to be amputated, blaming Callie in the process for making the decision. Towards season 11 they decided to have another baby; however, Callie couldn't carry another baby due to adhesions in her uterus and Arizona did not want to carry a baby. A fellowship that Arizona pursued was the tip of the iceberg for this relationship due to her not having enough time to care for a baby. They decided on couple's counseling and only there did Callie realize that she was drowning in this marriage. Their divorce led to Callie Torres leaving the show in the season finale of season 12.
Cristina Yang & Owen Hunt- Marriage & Divorce
This couple has to be on my top five favorite couples and they actually made sense together compared to her relationship with Preston Burke. They had amazing chemistry together and Owen Hunt showed a different side to Cristina Yang and in turn she helped Owen overcome his dark side. Unfortunately, this couple called it quits because they wanted different things in life. I'm still sad they called it quits and even more when Cristina Yang left the show. Their marriage caused the death of Henry Burton in season 8. Their divorce in season 9 causes Leah Murphy, Shane Ross & ultimately Cristina Yang to leave the show.
Miranda Bailey & Ben Warren- Marriage
Another favorite couple is Miranda Bailey and Ben Warren. She deserved someone that understood her passion for surgery and helped her become better when he pushed her to not give up to become Chief of Surgery. They got married on the tenth episode of season 9 & their marriage caused the deaths of Adele Webber that same episode and Heather Brooks in the second episode of season 10. I hope this couple doesn't divorce as it would most likely cause either Miranda or Ben to leave the show.
April Kepner & Jackson Avery- Marriage & Divorce
I never liked this couple to begin with because I felt that they never made sense. April Kepner, born again Christian virgin, and Jackson Avery who doesn't believe in God. There are many other differences that I won't get into. When April was going to marry Matthew (someone who she actually made sense with) Jackson professed his love for her at her wedding, causing her to ditch her wedding and married Jackson. Their marriage caused the death of their baby (Samuel Harper Avery) & Derek Shepherd. Since their divorce is recent in Season 12, it is still to be determined who leaves the show. DeLuca? Maybe Alex or Jo? Or perhaps Stephanie Edwards due to the loss of Kyle.
Richard Webber & Catherine Avery- Marriage
Richard Webber has had it rough in his love life. He was married to Adele Webber and cheated on her with Ellis Grey and lost both of them due to Alzheimer's. He found love with Catherine Avery and got married in the Season 11 finale. So far their marriage has caused the death of Kyle Diaz (portrayed as Wilmer Valderrama)
Owen Hunt & Amelia Shepherd- Marriage
Even though many people don't like this pairing because it's nothing like Cristina and Owen's relationship, it is still a very good pairing because both Owen & Amelia want the same things in their life which makes them the perfect pairing. As Meredith says to Cristina "Owen deserves someone who wants kids, just like you deserve someone who only wants you." Their marriage comes at the end of Season 12 so it is to be determined who dies.
This is just a theory of mine that I have come up with and I wanted to share it with the rest of you. Based on this, someone might die and leave the show in the new season of Grey's anatomy starting tomorrow.
