With what could be the craziest piece of news you'll hear this month, Warner Bros. is courting Oscar winner #MelGibson to direct Suicide Squad 2. The Hollywood Reporter learned that Gibson is in early talks to helm the upcoming sequel. While no official offer has been made, Gibson is reportedly doing his comic book homework and researching the history of the Squad.

But before you think this is a done deal, the studio is also eyeing up other directors to step into the role. Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer, Safe House's Daniel Espinosa and Warm Bodies' Jonathan Levine are all being looked at to potentially direct the upcoming supervillain team-up, as well. Fleischer's success with Zombieland could make him a popular choice for the project. The comical and wacky tone that movie could be something that WB finds attractive for its gang of misfits.

Gibson being courted for #SuicideSquad2 adds to his ongoing redemption story with Hollywood. Gibson was all but ousted from the industry during the 2000s after making offensive anti-Semitic comments. Along with this news, he seems to be making a comeback after directing the tremendous #HacksawRidge last year. That film garnered him his first Oscar nomination for directing since 1995's Braveheart, which saw him pick up Oscars for Best Direction and Picture.

It comes as no surprise that Warner Bros. is looking to put a sequel to Suicide Squad on the fast track. While the film garnered overwhelming negative reviews and divided audiences, it did manage to net an impressive $745 million at the box office.

With Warner Bros. seeking a new director for the sequel, it looks like Suicide Squad director David Ayer will not be returning. He will now be solely focused on directing the upcoming #GothamCitySirens.

With Margot Robbie working with David Ayer on Sirens, Will Smith focusing on his Deadshot solo film in development and Jai Courtney's Captain Boomerang rumored to have a part in The Flash, it is unsure who will be returning for the upcoming sequel. Will we see the original team return, or will it be an entirely new roster?
