With the latest Lara Croft movie officially underway, it's an exciting time for video game and movie fans alike, and Tomb Raider isn't the only franchise that's getting the Hollywood treatment. Out of the hundreds of thousands of films currently in development, a pretty large portion of them are actually adaptations of (mostly) successful video games.

Whether this is a good thing or not is somewhat debatable — blockbusters like Prince of Persia and Doom aren't a patch on the original worlds that inspired them — but you can't deny that it's always fascinating to see our favorite franchises translated onto the silver screen.

We can only hope that the upcoming releases are faithful and worthy of the established names they've been given but for better or for worse, we'll be front seat at the cinema anyway. Here's everything that's coming up.

1. Ratchet and Clank — April 29, 2016

Sony, Focus Features

Ratchet & Clank tells the story of two unlikely heroes as they struggle to stop a vile alien named Chairman Drek (Paul Giamatti) from destroying every planet in the Solana Galaxy. Ratchet (James A. Taylor) is the last of his kind -- a foolhardy "lombax" who has grown up alone on a backwater planet with no family of his own. Clank (David Kaye) is a pint-sized robot with more brains than brawn. When the two stumble upon a dangerous weapon capable of destroying entire planets, they must join forces with a team of colorful heroes called The Galactic Rangers in order to save the galaxy. Along the way, they will learn about heroism, friendship, and the importance of discovering one's own identity.
