To be fair the postal services has done movie stamps. The Universal Monsters, the Star Wars Universe, Looney Tunes and Early TV Classics have all been given philatelic homages depicted realistically and somberly as possible. The best that can be said about them is that they show the surface well. But where is the fun and great movie memories we all remember? Where is the essence that stamped these classics into the permanent space of every movie-goers heart and soul?
Digital artist Clark Orr remembers the fun. That is why every one of his 17 "pop culture postage" (now on display at L.A. based Gallery 1988 West through February 18th) vibrates with 24 fps Easter Eggs and cinema echoes. Orr knows that it is the memory and not the reality that matters when it comes to classic movies.
A figure of a DeLorean is enough to recall the fun of Back to the Future. E.T. only needs him and Elliot in a bicycle against a giant moonscape to take us back to our movie home. Mountains, the Overlook Hotel and the giant maze are enough to recall the horrible delights of The Shining.
Enoy all.
