The current list is sorted by released date, therefore, it is not a ranked one. The films were selected among more than 400 horror titles released and watched in the past six years, from many different countries, styles, sub-genres and plots.
50. Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil (2010)
Horror comedies are widely present in the genre's history, but Tucker and Dale vs. Evil is deemed to stand among the best of all time. In this hilariously fun and bloody flick, two hillbillies are taken as killers and kidnappers by a group of young people after they help a girl out in the woods. While trying to rescue their friend from Tucker and Dale (who are the nicest hillbillies possible) an accidental mayhem ensues.
A perfect film for anyone into horrorcomedy and metahorror!
[[yt:NdNpFoWrBDQ]]
49. Dream Home (2010)
Forget about kung-fu vampires. Dream Home is China's take on the slasher genre that will make most American filmmakers jealous. In this insanely gory and violent film, a woman starts murdering the inhabitants of an apartment building in the most brutal ways for a very dubious reason!
This film is for fans who are into splatter/gore and Asian horror!
[[yt:o4dD1Fvw6XI]]
48. Cold Fish (2010)
From the guy who brought us Suicide Club, comes one of the most chilling and disturbing serial killer films ever made. Cold Fish is about a regular shop owner who starts a complicated relationship with an utterly insane murderer.
Great pick for anyone into the world of serial killers and Japanese horror!
[[yt:tm-rrXaK0Qg]]
47. I Saw The Devil (2010)
When a serial killer kills the pregnant wife of a special forces agent, vengeance falls upon the killer. I Saw the Devil is the single most striking horror/thriller of the century. It brilliantly combines shocking amounts of violence and a group of characters who are all devilish in their own ways with a mesmerizing cinematography and artistic touch.
Are you looking for a bloody revenge film? This is everything you have ever asked for! Part of my 2010's Top 5
[[yt:xwWgp1bqVwE]]
46. Piranha 3D (2010)
An earthquake releases thousands of prehistorical piranhas on a lake during spring break, resulting in a true slaughter. One of the most acclaimed horror remakes of the century, Piranha 3D is a rare occasion of improvement over the original. Setting aside the Jaws feel, Piranha goes straight for the entertainment value and nails it.
This is best choice if you are looking for gore and mindless fun.
[[yt:RdFx7-u4Q68]]
45. Hatchet 2 (2010)
The first sequel to Adam Green's Hatchet is a love letter to the slasher genre. The slasher Victor Crowley absolutely destroy his victims in a fast paced and incredibly fun film.
Fans of the Friday the 13th franchise would definitely enjoy this one!
[[yt:G0okdxN8f6w]]
44. Insidious (2010)
When the youngest son of the Lambert family falls into a mysterious coma, they are forced to deal with supernatural forces trying to take over his unconscious body. This is the first of a series of highly successful ghost films by James Wan, and so far his best, even though The Conjuring remains his most acclaimed.
If haunted house, ghosts and spiritual plans are what you are looking for, this is your film!
[[yt:zuZnRUcoWos]]
43. Beyond The Black Rainbow (2010)
This one is hard to define. Set almost entirely inside a laboratory, this experimental film is a journey of the senses. One that very few people will understand due to the lack of exposition or dialogue, but that will leave a lasting impression on everyone willing to dive into the universe beyond the black rainbow.
If you want to experience a psychedelic trip, go for 'Beyond the Black Rainbow.'
[[yt:Q1ertVYn750]]
42. Scream 4 (2011)
This last installment in the renowned Scream franchise brings back the meta fun of the original film. Many years after the last appearance of Ghostface, a new killer wearing the same mask is back to the game.
The Scream fanchise speaks for itself! It's always a great pick for slasher fans.
[[yt:JKRtyVLWV-E]]
41. Father's Day (2011)
A group of people unite against the serial killer known as Father's Day Killer before he strikes again. Astron 6's Father's Day remains one of the most impressive and gruesome low budget horror flicks of the decade.
Fans of gore, satanism, insanity and depravity, behold!
[[yt:z3Fg_K08YIA]]
40. The Woman (2011)
Very people know that, but The Woman is the sequel of 2009's Offspring, a film about a group of wild cannibal people living in the outskirts of a small town. In The Woman, the last remnant of this people, a ferocious woman, is captured by a lawyer who wants to "civilize" her.
Are you into rape-revenge films such as 'I Spit On Your Grave'? 'The Woman' is a twisted and sick take on that kind of film!
[[yt:fCNS0Gc9Rmg]]
39. P.O.V. A Cursed Film (2012)
This Japanese found footage horror / mockumentary gathers every trope of the j-horror subgenre in a meta way. After watching some seemly cursed video tapes live during a TV program, the host of said show attempts to get hid of the haunting that possesses her. And everything is recorded by the TV crew!
If you are a fan of J-horror, found footage or both, 'P.O.V.' is a must-watch.
[[yt:va7q4aOTu9g]]
38. Sinister (2012)
Long before directing Dr. Stranger for Marvel, Scott Derrickson delivered one of the most popular mainstream horror films of the decade. Sinister follows an author investigating a series of mysterious murders connected to a supernatural force.
Fans who like the work of James Wan would totally like 'Sinister.'
[[yt:_kbQAJR9YWQ]]
37. The Cabin In The Woods (2012)
Frequently mentioned as the best horror flick of the century, which is a seriously questionable statement, The Cabin in the Woods is, nonetheless, one of the most inventive horror films ever made. A group of teenagers go to an isolated cabin in the woods, where they are forced to be confronted with a supernatural threat. But there is something very curious behind that.
Are you looking for a film such as 'Scream,' that plays with the rules of the horror genre, with 'Cabin in the Woods' you are in for a treat.
[[yt:NsIilFNNmkY]]
36. Resolution (2012)
Jumping straight back to indie filmmaking, Resolution is a character-driven nightmare about a man trying to help his addicted friend to abandon drug abuse. It all goes to hell when they realize they both start to lose contact with reality and descend into a bizarre world, almost as if they were trapped inside a horror film.
Fans of the more alternative and indie horror films must give 'Resolution' a shot.
[[yt:6-5uBCIA94c]]
35. Lovely Molly (2012)
Created by the same guys who brought us The Blair Witch Project, Lovely Molly also explored viral marketing to set up a dark, convincing universe. The film has some occasional use of found footage, and it shows a woman dealing with something that might be a serious case of psychosis or demonic possession. The last frame will haunt you forever.
Good pick for found footage fans, even though it isn't entirely one.
[[yt:gFOuKIJkgU8]]
34. V/H/S (2012)
Horror anthologies are cool again! And all of that thanks to V/H/S, the first of a franchise that is a mixed bag of many horror stuff with the found footage aesthetics. The first segment has got a feature-length version, which is about to be released on late 2016.
Another fantastic choice for found footage fans!
[[yt:0Ka3e8n_X9M]]
33. Grabbers (2012)
Another horror comedy, but this time one that is severely under-seen. Grabbers is clearly influenced by the Wright's Shaun of the Dead, as it shows a bunch of drunk people having to deal with a monster attacking their small town. Entertaining from the beginning to the end.
Make it a drinking game: every time a character drinks beer or the monster kills someone, you drink!
[[yt:4e3izWdh9WM]]
32. Maniac (2012)
Watching a serial killer doing his thing might be unnerving enough, but watching a serial killer doing his thing from his point of view is even more shocking. Maniac puts the viewer inside the shoes of psychotic serial killer Frank, a mannequin-obsessed maniac. Shocking and horrifying with a perfect soundtrack, it is one of the five best of the decade.
A must-watch for horror fans in general. Part of my 2010's Top 5.
[[yt:4umIfrP_vMk]]
31. Lesson Of The Evil (2012)
School tragedies are a taboo in the west, but Takashi Miike doesn't give a damn. Lesson of the Evil gives zero f**** to what is politically correct and delivers this absurd film about a teacher who is also a mad serial killer.
Like 'Cold Fish,' this is ideal for people looking for serial killer/mass murderer film.
[[yt:o-jOQA_8gA8]]
30. You're Next (2011)
Masked killers. Home invasion. Final girl. With a twist. The feminine figure in the horror genre is constantly changing from victims and eye candy to powerful, independent, smart and combative. You're Next's protagonist is the embodiment of all of that.
If girl power suits your tastes, Erin will impress you!
[[yt:ufUQWpEkbf0]]
29. Byzantium (2012)
This beautifully shot vampire film comes from the same director of Interview With the Vampire. Following the story of two fugitive sort-of-vampire women, it has one of the most impressive cinematographies of this list. Byzantium is so attractive that it hypnotizes us like only a vampire would do.
You want a different take on vampirism, 'Byzantium' won't disappoint.
[[yt:_zu2cW7AhO8]]
28. Evil Dead (2013)
Another remake to prove that remaking is not always a bad thing when you have enough creative potential behind a film. Abandoning the humorous tone of the Evil Dead franchise, this remake goes full blown sanguinolent when a group of teenagers unveil a demonic force hidden in a isolated cabin in the woods.
Set aside your fears, this is a remake that doesn't disappoint, especially when you accept that Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell aren't in it and they didn't try to copy their style.
[[yt:BHDJm1D2ELw]]
27. V/H/S 2 (2013)
The sequel to V/H/S managed to be even better than its predecessor, especially because of the second segment, "Safe Haven," which is one of the best segments to ever be conceived for a horror anthology. Bloodier, gorier and crazier, it is the perfect sequel.
The perfect follow up for 'V/H/S.' 'Safe Haven' alone makes it a must-watch.
[[yt:63Tv0lhD1fw]]
26. The Conjuring (2013)
Amidst the mainstream horror, The Conjuring is probably the most popular of all the films in this list. James Wan does a great job in applying all the rules and formulas of the haunted house/supernatural subgenre to show the Warrens combat against a witch's haunting.
The ultimate crowd-pleaser! 'The Conjuring' is traditional horror for all tastes.
[[yt:k10ETZ41q5o]]
25. Wolf Creek 2 (2013)
The sequel to the oz-ploitation slasher Wolf Creek takes Mick Taylor to a far more brutalizing journey through the outbacks. Offensively violent, Wolf Creek 2 is the sort of slasher film horror fans are always looking for.
Want even more slashers and serial killers? Mick Taylor is your guy!
[[yt:s4bqeT5edbs]]
24. Horns (2013)
Adapted from the book of similar name written by Stephen King's own Joe Hill, Horns stars Harry Potter as a man who becomes a devilish, horned creature, with the power of revealing people's true intentions. A great blend of fantasy and horror.
Daniel Radcliffe isn't Harry Potter anymore. Joe Hill and Alex Aja made sure of it. A good filme for people looking for a horror with an unique plot.
[[yt:yg9GW3Krsi8]]
23. Insidious 2 (2013)
The second part of the Insidious franchise (which is going to get a fourth part sooner than we think), has received a far worse reception than his other part. The film that takes the Lambert's family curse to a whole new level, however, remains Wan's most personal vision and good enough to figure in this list.
If you liked 'Insidious,' give this a go. But you can totally skip the third part.
[[yt:fBbi4NeebAk]]
22. Bilocation (2014)
Directed by Mari Asato, one of the most prominent figures in the j-horror scenario nowadays, Bilocation is a one-of-a-kind film, that narrates the story of a woman who discovers that she has a doppelgnger perpetrating some wrongdoings out there, pretending to be her. It is a true mind-bending film, to be seen at least twice.
If you are looking for women made horror flicks, 'Bilocation' is a good choice.
[[yt:5QOxXrjyzk8]]
21. Stage Fright (2014)
This slasher musical is set in a camp for young singers and dancers that is terrorized by a maniac. In the meanwhile, people sing and dance a lot. The fact that the film makes fun of itself for being a musical makes it even greater.
Are you fond of musicals? If the answer is yes, 'Stage Fright' is the film for you. If the answer is no, but you like slasher flicks, this is the film for you.
[[yt:CmzxIBTPfJA]]
20. Let Us Prey (2014)
Ser Davos, from Game of Thrones plays a supernatural entity that brings judgement to some evil people working the late shift in the police department of a small British town. One of the most pessimistic, bleak and violent films in this list.
A good choice if you are looking for a horror film set in a different location, with a very particular entity.
[[yt:J5Cskj8Asas]]
19. It Follows (2014)
How can a film be original and still pay homage to someone? It Follows introduces a particularly unique monster/creature/it inside a contemporary world, but it does so with a totally John Carpenter visual and musical aesthetic. A teenager is haunted by a dark force, stuck to her and not going to stop until it get's what it wants.
Definitely a treat for anyone into John Carpenter or quality horror. Part of my 2010's Top 5.
[[yt:Ymoh5SIqgtw]]
18. The Babadook (2014)
Often regarded as one of the best horror films of the decade as well, The Babadook features a mother and a son dealing with a supernatural manifestation strictly connected to their personal suffering, guilty and depression. The film was mistakenly advertised as a monster film, which made a lot of people dismiss it while not noticing they were watching one of the best psychological horror flicks recently made.
The best choice for anyone looking for psychological horror movies!
[[yt:k5WQZzDRVtw]]
17. Starry Eyes (2014)
Another indie masterpiece, Starry Eyes heavily criticizes Hollywood and the star system by throwing all sorts of body horror elements into the bag. The film is about an actress who almost literally descends into Hell to get a part into a film.
This one will please horror fans into slasher and satanism the most.
[[yt:2JbO0eIc3jM]]
16. The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014)
This one is an odd thing. Part remake, part sequel, it brings back the old school slasher The Town That Dreaded Sundown, which precedes Halloween, by introducing the killer in a world where the original film also exists! It's like if the original film was a documentary of a real case and now the killer is out again.
More meta-horror and yet another slasher horror film for your pleasure.
[[yt:iFnQ250vdAg]]
15. Last Shift (2014)
A perfect film to be seen in pair with Let Us Prey, Last Shift is also set inside a police station. Very similar to John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13, it features a rookie cop on the last shift of an about to be closed police station being haunted by satanic forces. As many people have said out there, it is like Assault on Precinct 666.
Pick this up together with 'Let Us Prey' and you'll have on hell of a scary double bill.
[[yt:3p0KIrh8hyM]]
14. Cub (2014)
Old school slashers are plenty out there. The good ones are rare though, and the Belgium Cub is one of them. The film plays as both a slasher and a coming-of-age flick about a group of children that go camping in the woods and become victims of a mad man living there.
Fans of slasher films are sure to enjoy 'Cub'!
[[yt:KKVo-MP2Ajc]]
13. A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (2014)
People are calling this the first Iranian vampire-western. A film set in a fictitious city where there is no moral distinction between characters, a lonely vampire kills bad men and falls in love with a good one. One of the more artsy films of the list and a slow burn, it will not please everyone.
A good pick for people into vampire and/or alternative/indie film.
[[yt:_YGmTdo3vuY]]
12. Dark Fables (2014)
Most people might not know of this yet, but there is a new Brazilian horror wave breeding. Dark Fables puts some of the most relevant filmmakers in this movie to work together in this anthology that gathers different stories related to the country's folklore. Everything was made with practical effects, which gives a very '80s style to film.
The perfect film for anyone into the '80s practical effects horror. Also a good way to get into Brazilian folklore!
[[yt:3i4ajKhvvHQ]]
11. Spring (2015)
Part romance, part Lovecraftian horror, Spring is the tale of a man who falls in love with a woman, who is, in fact, a monster. Literally.
It's the perfect Valentine's movie for horror loving couples.
[[yt:668ZdEbXlPY]]
10. Tag (2015)
The Japanese can make horror films like no other. Tag is nonsense, sick, confusing and ridiculously brutal. The opening sequence rivals with the opening of Ghost Ship as the most brutal of all time! In Tag, a girl is trapped inside a deranged game where she must survive against an omnipresent force that wants to kill her.
Another party film! I would suggest a drinking game every time something weird happens, but most people would get too drunk in the first 20 minutes.
[[yt:40vmaRpex4Y]]
9. Deathgasm (2015)
New Zealand's latest offering in the world of gory, brutal horror film is a metal-filled one. Deathgasm features a metal band accidentally summoning a devil to the world. The film is a lot of fun and guts, like a legit grandchild of Dead Alive.
If you enjoy the gory and entertaining New Zealand horror flicks and, of course, METAL, 'Deathgasm' is the film for you.
[[yt:Cg-c7UpJZLQ]]
8. The Editor (2014)
The Editor is Astron 6's magnum opus a brilliant, ingenious parody of the Italian Giallo, about an editor trying to unveil a series of bloody deaths in a film's set.
A must-see for fans of Argento, Fulci, Bava and all the other Italian masters.
[[yt:d7zoICSi1-I]]
7. The Final Girls (2015)
The Final Girls is the definite proof that horror can be heartwarming. This PG-13 slasher plays with every genre trope except the violence, which is a shame in a creative way. A group of teenagers is transported to a horror film they were going to watch, and now they have to fight against a masked killer for survival.
And even more masked killer/slasher for your pleasure!
[[yt:zreNh78kTjg]]
6. Bone Tomahawk (2015)
Bone Tomahawk features a group of men in a journey to rescue a damsel in distress, who was kidnapped by a tribe of savage, monstrous indians. It perfectly mixes old school western vibes with the gruesome cannibalism of the late '70s and early '80s. More than just a great horror flick, it is a film that understands the history of film and works with it. It is the best western Kurt Russel has starred in 2015.
If you are into westerns or the Italian cannibal circle, you are surely going to have a blast with this one.
[[yt:0ZbwtHi-KSE]]
5. Krampus (2015)
From the filmmaker behind Trick r' Treat, here comes another holiday themed horror film. Krampus, which is a more family friendly horror than the Halloween one, follows a family trying to survive the attacks of Krampus, the demonic version of Santa Claus who is set to punish the naughty. Don't be fooled by the overall light tone of the film, the ending is pure nightmare fuel.
If you enjoyed 'Trick 'r Treat,' 'Krampus' will satisfy you as well.
[[yt:h6cVyoMH4QE]]
4. The Witch (2015)
The single greatest horror film of the decade and consequently, one of the best horror films ever made. The Witch features a family being slowly thorn apart by the forces of the devil, represented by the witch.
Must-watch for everyone remotely interested in cinema. Part of my 2010's Top 5.
[[yt:iQXmlf3Sefg]]
3. Baskin (2016)
Baskin will probably be the first contact the Turkish cinema for a lot of people. In this film, a group of cops enter an abandoned building just to find themselves trapped in Hell. Literally. The film is not as gory as the trailer might promise, but it is shocking and gruesome nonetheless. It's like watching a Turkish version of Clive Barker.
If you like 'Hellraiser,' Clive Barker, gore and satanic cults give this a try, you won't regret it.
[[yt:y9SfWmXQY3o]]
2. The Wailing (2016)
South Korea has two spots in this list, and both films would easily compose a Top 5 horror films of the present decade. The Wailing is an unpredictable ride that will guarantee the viewer unimaginable sights. What starts as a crime investigation in a small village becomes a desperate fight for the very souls of the inhabitants of that place. The Wailing is not an easy film to grasp, but one that has the potential to haunt you forever.
Watch this with as little knowledge as possible. You'll left the film speechless. Part of my 2010's Top 5.
[[yt:43uAputjI4k]]
1. The Neon Demon (2016)
Refn's new film represents the ugliest side of a world of beauty, portraying shocking content in a mesmerizing way.
In the veins of 'Suspiria', it's a great option for anyone into stylish, colorful horror films.
