Tom Hiddleston will discover paradise on Earth and the monster that is hiding inside it in Kong: Skull Island. While doing press rounds for his first monster movie, the 36-year-old explained theme of the movie and the intense training he went through in making it.

Training Like A Soldier

In Kong: Skull Island, Hiddleston plays the role of James Conrad, a former member of the British Special Air Service who served in the Vietnam War. He was hired to join an adventure that will bring him to an island shrouded in mystery. The movie is marketed as an adventure-action movie. That said, the English actor trained in theater has to go into full-action movie.

In an interview with Straits Times, Hiddleston revealed that he trained with a former US Navy Seal and two former British Royal Marines in order to get the character of James Conrad right. He recounted that he used to get up at four in the morning for his training. It all seems worth it, however, because the actor used the experience to learn a bit about the discipline and the routines of a soldier. He was able to use it to portray his movie character.

Movie Theme: Man vs Nature

The Thor actor also reached back into his classical mythology education to flesh out his character and understand the movie. Kong: Skull Island brings Hiddleston, Brie Larson, John Goodman and Samuel L. Jackson into an island that hosts a lot of dangerous creatures aside from the titular King Kong. Hiddleston reveals that the movie uses these creatures as a metaphor for the struggle between man and nature.

“We as human beings exist in concert with the natural world and I think it’s important for us to be humbled by the sheer scale and breadth of nature,” he explained. The actor also added that human beings have dominated the planet. It is interesting to see how humans will react when they are thrown back as a prey.

Kong: Skull Island Movie Details
