BROOKINGS, S.D. — Jacob Johnson, an Agricultural Education, Agricultural Science and Dairy Production major at South Dakota State University (SDSU) from Windom, Minn., recently received two scholarships from the National Dairy Shrine.

Johnson was selected to receive the Klussendorf scholarship and a National Dairy Shrine/Dairy Management, Inc. Education & Communication Scholarship.

Klussendorf scholarship recipients are selected for their activities, experience, interest in showing dairy cattle and future plans. The scholarships are made possible by donations from Chris Kampf and Klussendorf members and friends. The National Dairy Shrine DMI Education & Communication scholarships are given to students pursuing education or communications careers in dairy or food-related industries. Scholarship recipients are selected based on leadership, experience, academic ability and interests in education or communications.

Johnson wants to work in the dairy industry, possibly by returning to his family farm, where they milk 100 Holsteins, or as an agriculture teacher.

“I eventually want to return home to my family’s farm,” says Johnson, who applied for the scholarship after encouragement from his sisters and SDSU Dairy & Food Science Department staff.

“I’ve been extremely fortunate to receive this scholarship,” “It’s tough paying for your college education when you’re taking credits for three majors and getting to the end of your college career.”

Johnson credits his experience at SDSU for putting him on the path to success.

“I’m really glad I went to SDSU,” he says. “The professors in the Dairy & Food Science Department are really great to work with.”

The National Dairy Shrine, based in Fort Atkinson, Wis., brings together dairy producers, scientists, students, educators, marketers and others who share a desire to preserve our dairy heritage and keep the dairy industry strong. Founded in 1949, the National Dairy Shrine now has nearly 19,000 lifetime members. One of the missions of the National Dairy Shrine is to inspire future dairy leaders with scholarships.
