MANHATTAN, Kan. — Maintaining its status as the leader in grain industry education, the IGP Institute professional team knows that it must constantly change to meet the training needs of its global partners and participants.
“One of the strengths of the IGP Institute is that our curriculum managers and grain science faculty are engaged in their respective industries,” says Brandi Miller, IGP Institute associate director. She adds, “This allows them to respond immediately to the emerging educational needs, while still focusing on our mission to create a preference for U.S. grains and oilseeds.”
Miller sites the adaption of the HACCP offerings and the addition of the Food Safety Preventative Controls for Animal Nutrition (PCQI) trainings as an example of listening to the industry and supplying a training that meets the educational industry need.
“The HACCP/PCQI courses are wildly popular and we plan to offer them multiple times in 2017,” Miller says.
Along with that, she says the feed manufacturing and grain quality management offerings led by Carlos Campabadal will be expanding in 2017.
“Carlos is generating a lot of new courses for the year ahead. Many of these will be expansions of past courses,” Miller says. Several of the courses Campabadal leads are taught in English and Spanish.
Regarding the grain processing and flour milling area, Miller sees the new curriculum manager, Shawn Thiele, taking an earnest look at the trainings and implementing changes for the upcoming year.
“One of the changes Shawn has made is to offer our popular Introduction to Flour Milling course multiple times in the year ahead,” Miller says.
The third curriculum area is grain marketing and risk management led by Jay O’Neil. About that Miller says, “Due to the climate in the grain market that is a result of high yields and low grain prices, I think the grain purchasing and risk management course offerings will be of great interest to professionals around the world.”
Finally, all three of these areas are supported by the adult education expertise offered by Miller and Trina Adams, distance education coordinator. Along with helping with the distance education components of the offerings, Miller and Adams also work together to guide the K-State/GEAPS (Grain Elevator and Processing Society) partnership.
“Due to the increased interest in the credential of grain operations and management we will be offering that twice in 2017. We are also offering one course multiple times in partnership with AFIA (American Feed Industry Association),” Miller says.
