STOCKTON, Mo. — Opportunities to gain and share horticultural knowledge is available through University of Missouri Extension’s Master Gardener program in Cedar County.

The Master Gardener Program is an intensive horticulture course offered statewide by University of Missouri Extension. The 30 hours of classroom training provided by area horticulture specialists set Master Gardeners apart from other home gardeners and programs.

The Master Gardener class sessions will be held every Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., starting Feb. 10th and running through April 20th at the Cedar County Library in Stockton, Mo. Graduation activities will be held on April 27th.

A total of 10 three-hour sessions taught by trained professionals will cover horticulture principles and practices. Course topics are

Irrigation, Hobby Greenhouses & Tool Care

Plant Growth & Development

Plant Diseases

Soils & Composting

Entomology

Vegetable Gardening

Flower Gardening

Growing Fruit Crops

Turfgrass

Master Gardeners are volunteers who assist with horticulture education in the community. Thirty volunteer hours from participants are required the first year after training. Following that, 20 volunteer service hours are required each year to remain an active Master Gardener.

The volunteer service is usually done by volunteering as part of county Master Gardeners organization activities, serving as an advisor for community gardens, or helping to maintain the demonstration gardens.

Enrollment for the class is limited and there is a fee of $150 per person or $250 per couple (with one set of materials). Registration and payment are due by Jan. 29th.
