Since the birth of photography the body was one of the main characters and the objects of study of the first photographers on the move from analysis to the image of fashion.
Photography, like other artistic genres, tends to create models and icons to follow and is strongly influenced by the historical period and culture. We think for example to the role of fashion photography in sexual emancipation during the 60s or the mock unkempt style in’ 90s
But let’s step back in time.
We are in the early 900, the magazines Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar were among the first to begin to hire professional photographers to take pictures of affluent women age: the basic idea was to convey to its readers a message of luxury and refinement.
From the postwar period to 60s, the picture is revolutionized, like the costumes and society. The portraited subject leaves the rigid poses of the study and is portrayed in a real context, such as the street or the night clubs.
Richard Avedon becomes the protagonist of this revolution, along with William Klein and Robert Frank, who for their jobs are considered unanimously the fathers of street photography.
The rationality of visual composition is replaced by emotion and instinct: photography indeed becomes a tool to stop the reality in a seemingly random way, with large use of blur, overexposure or otherwise weak illumination.
The use of wide angle and telephoto, the natural light and the technical blur then become the stylistic elements of a new way of fashion photography: the road then becomes the new boardwalk with new visual rules and cultural styles.
In the ’90s and 2000s digital technology has given a different cut to the world of fashion photography and bring it closer to a growing number of reporters, by removing the reference points that had built over the years.
Also then the advent of social, in particular of apps like Instagram, have permanently altered the way to fashion photography. Many photographers are inspired by urban styles of the people in the street to create fashion images that become instant and real, leaving behind the artificiality of the pose and the building studio: fashion goes from the street to the walkways.
The profiles of the top brands and fashion bloggers are filled with natural and spontaneous photography in urban: photos of backstages, of daily life outfits or even of influencers, that became the focus of the brand narration also with their products.
Fashion Bean has gathered some of the best profiles to follow on instagram about this topic: such as @menwithclass | @MenWithStreetstyle | @streetetiquette and others quotetd by Complex like @giuseppeinthistown, @le21eme
