After my life took a turn off of the path that I (and my family) always thought it would be on, I was left adrift. I wasn’t sure where I was going to go with my life and how I was going to get there.
Well, I did know something. I knew what I thought was wrong with me and that I needed to fix it.
But that’s the exact wrong thing to think about.
Focusing on what you’re doing wrong and how you must fix it looks at negatives rather than positives. Instead, take the positive approach and focus on what you already do well.
You have a series of skills that make you incredibly valuable. This is who YOU are and what YOU offer the world. So why waste time thinking about what you’re not when you already have so much to bring to the table?
The #1 deathbed regret, according to The Top 5 Regrets of the Dying by Bonnie Ware, is “I wish I’d had the courage to live true to myself, not the life others expected of me.” Focusing on your strengths will also set you apart, as corporate culture teaches you to fix what you can’t do well instead of maximizing what you’ve already mastered.
So why be like everyone else? Remember: to brand yourself, you must first understand yourself.
What’s in Part 2? You’ll have to come back to find out, but I’ll give you a one word hint: player.
