Wildcat Mountain Natural Area! An Easy Side of Strenuous 5.5 Miles with Optional Post Hike Visit to Barrel Oak Winery

Wildcat Mountain is located on the western flanks of the Blue Ridge foothills between about 500 and 1,200 feet above sea level. The Wildcat Mountain Natural Area is a small gem of a sanctuary that owes its existence and splendor to nature, a generous family, happenstance, and the Nature Conservancy. Back in the 18th and 19th centuries, much of the 655-acre area was cleared as hardwood forests gave way to subsistence farmlands and woodlots.  But that trend was gradually reversed as the surrounding region endured first the Civil War and then the Great Depression. Farming and Logging ended in the 1940's, and, as humans left, plants and animals slowly reclaimed the land. In the 1960's, the Arundel family donated the land. There are a variety of wildflowers and the area is also home to deer, foxes, bobcats and smaller mammals, and bears.

Transition Hike

This is a 5.5-mile hike that will allow you to see if you are ready to move to more Strenuous level hiking. The first 1/2 mile is a steep uphill climb up the mountain. The elevation climb is 544 feet. NOTE: Due to the area at the top of the first hill (the one with one 500 feet of elevation gain in 0.5 mi) being closed in order to allow it to “regenerate”, it is not included in today's hike plan.  However, there will be plenty of the rolling hills. The area at the top o the  hill is expected to open by next summer or whenever the land has recovered enough to accommodate hiking. Thank you for understanding the change in a portion of the route for our hike plan.

Post Hike Get Together at The Barrel Oak Winery with Live Music!

This stunning winery offers lots of seating both outside and inside. Looking for a fun post hike activity to continue the camaraderie and good times from the trail? Look no further and join us to cozy in at Barrel Oak Winery (BOW) with your new and familiar faces from the hike! There are plenty of tables both inside and outside of the winery. However, they cannot be moved so if we have a very large group, we may not be able all to sit together as one big group (this has yet to happen but it could so I wanted to provide full disclosure). The winery also offers some great food for sale (often has food trucks on the weekends during entertainment). However, my favorite experience is to enjoy either a potluck or bring-your-own picnic to enjoy out on the lawn. From their website “We make about 24,000 gallons of wine right here on our property. Our best-kept secret is that you can take a self-guided tour of our downstairs production area if you’d like. We highly recommend it!”  Click Here to check out the Barrel Oak Winery website.
