Over the past week, the word new has probably been used by everyone of us about a billion times which is typical as we enter the new year of 2017.

As I anticipate the start of a new semester teaching English courses at Maria College, my attention (as often happens to us English teachers) has been drawn to the word new, so (as is typical of us English teachers), I headed to the dictionary for some information on this word.

According to merriam-webster.com, the word new is defined as follows: “having recently come into existence; being other than the former or old; made or become fresh; different from one of the same category that has existed previously.”

So, what can we expect to be “other” or “different” in 2017? The answer to that question is only partially known since the year 2017 may have many new surprises in store for us, but a few new aspects of 2017 that we do know are--

There will be a new presidential administration in the United States with Donald Trump in the Oval Office.

The human body supposedly has a new organ--the mesentery—discovered by an Irish surgeon, so change the 78 organs in the human body to 79, and click here to read more.

The Disney animated movie Beauty and the Beast from 1991 has been made into a new non-animated version that will open in theaters in March, 2017. Check out this fascinating side-by-side video of the trailers for the original animated and the new non-animated versions.

The cosmetics company CoverGirl has several new faces for its ad campaigns including James Charles (from Delmar, NY!) and Nura Afia, both of whom certainly give CoverGirl a beautiful fresh new look. Click here to watch CNN video.

And, of course, the ever-changing technology in our lives will continue to offer new products and services. Forbes magazine offers a sneak peek into what will be new in technology.

For other new aspects of 2017, we will just have to wait and see!

Until next time . . .
