For those that are unfamiliar with PurePolygons, all of the tutorials and assets released use the most up to date techniques and tools in the industry. People are able to learn with in depth tutorials and videos that discuss the practices of creating tiling textures with Substance Designer and Zbrush, using the Unreal Engine to create beautiful landscapes, optimize game ready assets with LODs in Maya, and discuss the basic principles of creating artwork for video games. If you’re working on a new project or building a video game from the ground up, there are also some beautifully hand crafted and production ready assets available to populate your world with.
“I never imagined there would be such a positive response from everyone after releasing some of my tutorials,” says Jacob Norris, Artist and Founder at PurePolygons. “All I knew when I started creating these assets and walk throughs, was that I really wanted to share with people the knowledge I’ve picked up over the years from experience, long hours, and working alongside some of the most talented artists in the industry. It’s honestly been amazing to work at places like Naughty Dog, Nvidia, Insomniac Games, and Kojima Productions. Everyone is always so willing to push each other, ask questions, and do what it takes to make a beautiful video game that we are all happy with. I feel like when we share things like tutorials, game assets, or posting on websites like ArtStation and Polycount, that we all grow together and it makes the game industry better as a whole because of it.”
See what some of the people who have followed along with PurePolygons tutorials are saying:
“I just wanted to thank you for putting together such a massive and in depth library of tutorials!”
“It’s amazing seeing such techniques used at a professional level.”
“It was my first time using Zbrush / Designer, and I learned a loooot thanks to you”
“Your tutorials have been a game changer for me, thank you!”
The Procedural Nature Pack Vol. 2 is the latest asset pack released by PurePolygons and showcases the incredible power of the Unreal Engine, as well as many of the techniques that can be picked up in the Tutorials available on the PurePolygons Gumroad.
The Game Assets themselves actually serve as a great learning tool as well. Not only can artists create procedurally generated trees with splines inside of the unreal engine for some quick foliage, but it’s easy to open up the assets, materials, and blueprints to start picking apart some of the techniques used to create these environments.
It’s like being able to look into the mind of the artist and discover entirely new ways or solutions to problems that we all have. Especially when working within video games. There are generally a hundred different ways to do the same thing and the more we know, the more it really allows us to explore options and ideas we may not have considered before. The results can be incredible.
Take for example this grass ground texture. It’s a single material with displacement, albedo, roughness, and normal map rendered in marmoset with some simple grass alphas on top of it for foliage. The grass alpha’s use the same geometry to generate their texture as the geometry used on the ground for the landscape texture. It’s all about speeding up workflow without dropping the quality of the artwork.
