When it comes to balancing style and stage presence, few do it better than Lion Babe. The NYC duo, made up of singer Jillian Hervey and producer Lucas Goodman, make forward-thinking new soul that straddles the line between Little Dragon's twitchy electronics and Erykah Badu's smooth-as-silk empowerment grooves. Their 2016 debut is a veritable hit machine, anchored by singles like "Impossible" and "Where Do We Go." (You may also recognize Jillian's vocals from Disclosure's sophomore album Caracal, on which she guests.)
Onstage though, it's all about Hervey. She's a strong, striking beauty with a powerful voice and a wild mane who isn't shy about making big, bold fashion choices. (Think sequin leotards, kimono robes, and mile-high boots.) While she's no doubt a product of her upbringingmom Vanessa Williams provided an early introduction to high fashionHervey's look is all her own, a vibrant mix of new and vintage, inspired by everyone from Brigette Bardot to David Bowie. Below, we talk to Jillian about style icons and her maximalist beauty mantra, and go rifling through her rock-star-ready closet.
How does your day-to-day look compare to your onstage?
I tend to be versatile on and off stage; it really depends on where I am going and what environment I'm in. Stage Jillian is definitely more glam and attention-grabbing then I am in my everyday life. Comfort is always key, but for me that can mean a thong leotard.
Who are some of your favorite designers?
I am really loving the new pieces and collection at Gucci, in addition to that some staples are Mugler, Chanel, Halston, and Armani.
What are some of your favorite places to shop?
I'm not too big of a shopper, but I can always find quick and cute items from Trash and Vaudeville, American Apparel, and Top Shop. I am vintage girl though, so my absolute favorite is exploring flea markets, couture shops, and local vintage boutiques. I will miss Pat Fields in NY so much!
Who are your icons?
Brigitte Bardot, Verushka, Donyale Luna, David Bowie, Naomi Campbell, Chaka Khan and my parents.
How did you get into music?
We were required to play an instrument growing up, so I played trumpet and sang in the chorus. Music has always been in my life because of my family and surroundings. I was focusing on dance for most of my life, so once I met Lucas I started to explore the idea of writing and singing because I liked his sound. It really just happened as a result of living in NYC and exploring my creativity.
What do you like the most about playing music for a living?
The best part of playing music is having the ability to play. I like to call it "serious play"; I am very fortunate to have a profession that is focused on creating moods, connecting people, and inspiring people. And it's thrilling to be able to perform in front of a crowd.
Are there certain pieces/things you tend to wear a lot when you're on tour?
Yes. We were very much thrown into our first tours, so we had to plan quickly. I love my Demonia platform boots, silk kimono, leotards, fishnets, and statement chokers. If I'm with Disclosure I like to add a boa.
What's your pre-show prep routine?
It usually starts with some tea, and then I do some vocal warm-ups and stretch. I'll vibe to some music and set the mood with some candles while I get my hair and makeup done. Lastly, I put my outfit on, say a quick prayer, and then hit the stage.
Do you have any secret beauty tricks or hacks?
I don't think it's a secret that I love all things big: when in doubt add more lashes, hair, and glitter.
Are there any crazy clothing scores you're especially proud of?
I was recently gifted a pair of navy blue velvet over-the-knee boots from Kurt Geiger that I absolutely adore! They are so sexy and comfortable, but they're unique enough that I only wear them on special occasions.
If you could raid one person's closet, who would it be?
I've spent most of my life raiding my mom's closet, so I'll give her a break and pick Diana Ross. I can't even begin to imagine all of the goodies she has!
