Jin Shin Jyutsu is the art of happiness, longevity and compassion. It awakens our awareness of the fact that all we need to live a successful life is to find balance—physically, mentally and emotionally. The power to help ourselves lies within our own hands.

Jin Shin Jyutsu can be practiced anywhere and at any time. The next time you are having a difficult day at work, simply use this method to regain your balance.

Foundation of concepts

1. Life energy circulates throughout the universe and within each individual organism.

2. The universal life energy manifests itself in different levels of intensity. This is referred to as its “depths.”

3. Breathing is the basic concept of life energy. It enables us to unblock stress and energy via exhalation.

4. Obstructions lead to physical, mental and emotional disharmony called “attitudes.”

5. Energy moves through the body in different ways. This is called its “flow.”

6. Energy moves down and up the front of the body. This movement creates balance and harmonizes the body’s energy levels.

7. There are 26 sites on the body called “safety energy locks.” They act as circuits to protect the body when the flow of life energy is blocked.

8. Within each of us is an underlying harmony that is always present. If we suffer from an illness (disharmony), this is called a “label.”

Breathing to find harmony

Breathing is the best tool we have at our disposal. It can be used anytime to balance life energy and healing flow.

To achieve harmony, the first step is to remove all blockages in the life energy by breathing. When you exhale, you feel the tension drain from your shoulders, torso and pelvis all the way through your toes. You become more relaxed and aware of yourself.

In order to release the tension in your body, you must take 36 breaths. Make sure to count your exhales. After using this technique, your pathway will be clear.

When using your hands as a source of energy, keep the following points in mind.

• Relax, just be yourself.

• Choose whatever position is most comfortable for you (sitting, standing, etc.).

• Hold each position for a few minutes or until you feel a relaxing sensation.

• For best results, complete this sequence daily.

Each of our fingers is responsible for harmonizing a depth of our being. These depths help us control our fears or sad feelings and are the primary sources of energy disharmony.

Each depth is responsible for a specific set of functions within the body, mind and spirit. Depths are described as the process of energy taking form.

The first depth is responsible for receiving and processing substances. It is a total body harmonizer.

Function: Skin surface

Organ: Spleen and stomach

Attitude: Worry

Finger: Thumb

Element: Earth

Greatest stress: Sitting

Taste: Sweet

The stomach and spleen are the organs associated with the first depth. The stomach helps with digestion and the spleen energizes the other organs. To balance the first depth, press either thumb and hold it for at least one minute. This will help balance the system and restore well-being.

The second depth provides the body with energy and vitality. It regulates the essential rhythms of life. It brings joy.

Function: Deeper layer of skin

Organ: Lung and large intestine

Attitude: Grief

Finger: Ring

Greatest stress: Reclining

Taste: Pungent

The corresponding organs are the lungs and the large intestine. When you are overwhelmed by grief, the second depth becomes unbalanced. It blocks all natural paths around the body and becomes stuck. In order to unblock this path, you must be receptive to bringing your rhythm of life back.

To balance the second depth, hold the ring finger for at least one minute. This will help to release any blocked energy and strengthen the respiratory system.

The third depth is a harmonizer depth that regulates and balances our systems. It is responsible for maintaining all of the body’s individual elements. It balances our emotions and helps us learn how to view life in a more compassionate way. It is a general harmonizer.

Function: Blood essence

Organ: Liver and gall bladder

Attitude: Anger

Finger: Middle

Greatest stress: Reading

Taste: Sour

The third depth oversees the liver and gall bladder. It helps distribute various nutrients to the body. To balance the third depth, hold either middle finger for at least one minute. This will help ease any discomfort you experience throughout the day.

The fourth depth represents the flow or fluidity of motions. It enables us to overcome the negative impact of mental, emotional and physical sluggishness. It keeps all things flowing.

Function: Muscular system

Organ: Kidney and bladder

Attitude: Fear

Finger: Index

Greatest stress: Standing

Taste: Salty

The fourth depth controls the muscular system. It also governs the organs that regulate the movement of water throughout the body, primarily the kidney and bladder. When the fourth depth becomes unbalanced, the result is fear.

To balance the fourth depth, hold either index finger for at least one minute. This treatment will relieve back pain.

The fifth depth is the source of intuitive knowledge, a place where we can receive inspiration directly from the universe. This depth is responsible for the skeletal system. It brings laughter.

Function: Skeletal

Organs: Heart and small intestines

Attitude: Effort

Finger: Little

Greatest stress: Walking

Taste: Bitter

In order for the fifth depth to remain balanced, we must avoid the following steps.

• Do not judge others. This unbalances our systems.

• Do not compare or compete with others. Every person is unique, and therefore impossible to compare.

• Do not label others. When we label others, we are promoting disharmony.

• Always answer the question: Why? When you take time to understand something, you uncover the true answer. To balance the fifth depth, hold either little finger for at least one minute.

To balance equilibrium, press down in the lower center of the palm for at least one minute to ease tension.

Organs: Diaphragm, umbilicus

The route to harmony
