I’ve heard amazing things about Cocktails in the city from people who went to their summer event last year. From what I’ve gathered, the idea is to round up as many of London’s top cocktail mixologists under one roof so that people like you and me can enjoy maximal amount of cocktails for minimal effort. What’s not to love about that? After a pretty long week at work and a sneaky lunch time google image search of the rather fancy One Mayfair where the event was being held, Joe and I were ready to go.
The venue, formerly St Mark’s Church and now a Grade I listed building, was an impressive setting for some of the best cocktail makers in London, including Reverend JW Simpson, The Alchemist and City Social, who were joined this year by some equally innovative bars from Amsterdam and Paris. Split over four floors, the heated and fur throw’d rooftop snug was the perfect place to try some warming whisky cocktails, whilst the prohibition themed cellar sold absinthe laden concoctions from it’s alcove bars. The London Cocktail club were serving up a perfectly sweet and sour Show Me the Money, which mixed Zubrowka vodka with lemon and apple juice, egg white and absinthe. I also really enjoyed 68 and Boston’s tart Spirit of Adventure, which mixed Dry Gin, Amontillado Sherry and Apricot Liqueur with fresh lemon juice and hibiscus syrup and was finished with petals and candied orange peel. Sipping on this under the looming altar was particularly enjoyable. We got a bit lost at one point and even found a lady selling cheap cans of beer behind a big black curtain. They really had it all!
We had such a great night, and was probably one of the more glamorous pub crawls Joe and I have been on in a while. Many of the bars run cocktail master classes earlier on in the evening which I would love to try next time. We will definitely be back!
