Top 100 Most Popular Store Credit Cards
Methodology
This day and age, credit card offers find their way into just about every nook and cranny of daily life. Aside from “pre-qualified” offers in the mail and 24/7 TV commercials, the majority of these offers can be found on the ever expansive internet where they flourish on every sidebar and widget imaginable. In short, credit card offers are everywhere!
All of these advertising efforts are meant to insert brand names, or certain keywords, into the heads of consumers. If that is accomplished, then theoretically speaking, there is a better chance at making a credit card deal. This is practiced by many major credit card issuers as well as retail companies with their own store credit cards, and these practices are meant to increase product and brand recognition (and use of quality financial services, too!).
To say the least, more than a few credit cards are generally recognized by the average consumer thanks to the perseverance of advertising. While business success can certainly be measured by successful credit card applications or revenue from credit cards, the recognition of a brand name is a bit more difficult to quantify.
Here at LendEDU, we thought it would be interesting to quantify credit card recognition by measuring engagement with consumers online, or rather consumer searches online. In other terms, we wanted to measure the popularity of different credit cards by how often the average internet user searches for these products from scratch. Keep in mind that this doesn't involve clicking a link on the side of a web page; in fact, it actually involves typing the credit card name from scratch into a search engine.
The line of thinking is a higher search volume provides insight on just how popular a credit card is in terms of brand recognition. Here is a list of the most popular store credit cards and standard credit cards by monthly search volume on Google.

Monthly Search Volume (searches/month)
Methodology
Keyword analysis software from Ahrefs was the main tool used for data collection in this study. All data was collected during the second week of December, so the data is especially representative of holiday organic search trends.
For those who do not know, Ahrefs can analyze organic search metrics for words and phrases (commonly referred to as keywords) that are entered into Google; additionally, it can output data for multiple keyword phrases that are relevant to one specific input keyword. In short, it is a tool for measuring keyword search performance in Google and for researching relating keywords.
With Ahrefs, keyword data can be exported into a spreadsheet along with search engine metrics. Typical metrics include keyword difficulty, organic search volume, clicks on google, cost per search, and return rate.
The only metric used in this study was organic search volume. In other words, organic search volume is the number of times each month a certain phrase or keyword is entered into Google. It is commonly referenced as “monthly searches” or “monthly search volume.”
To start this study, the term “credit card” was inputted into the ahrefs keyword search tool which generated over 60,000 entries, or phrases, that were related to the term “credit card.” This list of related search terms was initially sorted by search volume, so the most searched for keywords were towards the top of the list. Some examples include terms such as “home depot credit card,” “credit cards for bad credit,” target credit card,” chase credit card login,” and many other similar phrases.
130 different store credit cards were extracted from the first 1,000 rows of keywords. This list was entered into the keyword batch analyzer from Ahrefs. Each store card was entered as an exact match phrase (*store name* + “credit card”). The top 100 store credit cards by monthly search volume were listed in the publication, and cards that tied were listed in alphabetical order.
