One of the best ways to save money during the holidays is to DIY your Christmas gifts - and luckily, you can DIY gifts for the whole family, not just your mom. Yes, of course mom is easier to DIY for, since you know she’ll love whatever you get her, but even your brother can appreciate a DIY gift if it’s done right.

To help, we combed through Pinterest with our eyes open for some no-fail, budget-saving DIY gifts that will have your whole family happy on Christmas morning - and, if we’re being honest, they’ll also be completely in awe of your newfound craftiness. Martha who, amirite?

Mom

Sure, mom might be easy to DIY gifts for, but you’ve come a long way since the days when putting a painted handprint on a piece of construction paper was considered art. Step up your game this year by DIY-ing some peppermint bath salts for your mom. It does double duty as something she’ll actually want, and as something that’s entirely within even the most beginner-crafter’s skill set. All you’ll really need are some epsom salts, essential oils, a mason jar and a decorative tag.

Dad

Despite being objectively hard to shop for, your Dad will love these photo coasters, that you can make with only a few required supplies. They’re not the fastest craft, sure, but you can choose photos that have special significance for your dad (and sneak a photo of the two of you in there, because why not?). Just think: every time he’s sipping a cold drink, or reminded that he should really be using a coaster, he’ll remember your thoughtful and useful DIY Christmas gift.

Brother

Ok, coasters are just a useful gift, which is why they show up twice on this list - but the coasters you made for your dad aren’t really going to be a great fit for your brother. Instead, check out this beer coaster DIY that you can make out of the packaging from his favorite brew (if he’s of age, of course!). Since you’ll need a six pack of them anyways to score the cardboard for this DIY, you can gift him all six as well - or save some for yourself!

Sister

If your sister is anything like mine, she loves a good hot beverage. Whether she’s more into tea or loves a strong coffee, there’s one common denominator: cute cups. With this easy DIY option, you can customize a mug just for her that she’ll be proud to use, and you can even make sure it’s in her favorite colors. All you’ll need is a stencil of the first letter of her name, a plain white mug, some Sharpies and an oven! (Yes, you bake the mug - it’s not as weird as it sounds, I promise.)

Niece

Everyone loves Legos, but full Lego sets are anything but a cheap Christmas gift option. However, if your niece is into Legos, you can make her entire Lego-building experience better by DIY-ing a custom Lego tray table for her with a few simple items. While this gift could work for your niece or your nephew, just think of the decoration options that are open to you for a niece! You could make sure the tray itself is in her favorite colors, or customize it with her name on the front.

Nephew

Even if your nephew has a piggy bank already, you can make him into a super-saver with these superhero-themed Mason jar piggy banks. It’s a great craft because you can customize it to just about any of his interests, and theme it for his favorite superhero or character on TV. Plus, as a bonus, you only need a few materials, which makes it the perfect DIY gift.

Grandma

Talk about a DIY project you’ll want to keep for yourself: you can make your own candles in vintage tea cups, which would be the perfect DIY gift for your grandma this Christmas. It sounds super complex, but honestly, with this tutorial you’ll be a candle-crafting pro in minutes. The hardest thing will be finding teacups you think your grandma will like - since you know she knows her teacups. The second hardest thing? Picking just one or two essential oils for the scents. Peppermint is a classic for the holidays, but you could always branch out!

Grandpa

Everyone knows Grandpa is the master of the grill, but your DIY Christmas gift this year could add a new trick to his BBQ game: with just a few simple spices, you can mix up some custom magic BBQ rub that he can use on anything from chicken to ribs. All you’ll need besides the spices is a mason jar and a gift tag to go with it. The next time you hear someone ask him for his recipe, how cool will it be when he just looks at you, winks and says “Magic”?
