College is expensive. Really expensive..
So expensive, that College Board reported that the average student at an in-state public school should expect to pay about $19,548 this year. And, the average student at a private nonprofit should expect to spend about $43,921 this year.
Keeping up with the rapidly rising costs of higher education isn’t easy. Savings, scholarships, and financial aid can help, but for most students it won’t be enough. The rising costs of college has forced more and more families to finance their education through student debt. In 2016, 7 out of 10 college graduates will be leaving campus with a student loan statement in hand. On average, the class of 2016 will be graduating with about $30,000 in student debt. There are now more than 42.5 million Americans with student loan debt!
Student loans are a powerful tool when used correctly. However, when used incorrectly, or inefficiently, student loans can be a crushing weight. At LendEDU, we aim to educate new and current student loan borrowers for responsible repayment. So we started thinking...
What is the risk-reward of attending a 4-year college or university?
To answer that question we decided to do a little digging. After about a week of gathering data we formed the College Risk-Reward Indicator, or CRRI. CRRI is rather simple.
We defined risk as the average student loan debt per graduate. We defined reward as the average early career pay, or the median salary for alumni with 0-5 years of experience. Calculating CRRI is pretty easy:
College Risk-Reward Indicator:
Average Early Career Pay ($)
______________________________________________
Average Student Debt at Graduation ($)
Why should students, families, and institutions care about CRRI?
The first few years of student loan repayment are absolutely critical. According to the Federal Reserve, 10.3% of public 4-year graduates are delinquent, and 11.6% of non-profit private 4-year graduates are borrowers are delinquent. In the immediate years after graduation, repayment of accumulated interest and principal is key to lowering the total cost of student debt.
Instead of using mid-career pay, we used early career pay as our reward. Early career pay is more relevant when it comes to managing and repaying student debt. Low student loan debt, and high early career pay is a recipe for success. Whereas high student loan debt, and low early career pay is a recipe for failure.
The risk of not being able to repay student loan debt is significant. Late student loan payments, or even delinquency, can leave a lasting scar. Lower credit scores, the inability to save for retirement, the inability to get a mortgage or auto loan, and even the inability to start a family are serious risks for graduates.
In our analysis we compared the CRRI of 1,004 public and private colleges in the United States. The colleges and universities with the highest CRRI (Princeton University - 9.288) should be considered the best risk adjusted choice for Undergraduates. The colleges and universities with the lowest CRRI (Springfield College - 0.766) should be considered the worst risk adjusted choice for Undergraduates.
The average CRRI was 1.677. In other words, the average early career pay will be about 67% higher than student loan debt upon graduation.
Here are the best and worst CRRI scores for 4-year colleges and universities in the United States:

We encourage students and families to consider the risk-reward of attendance before decision day. If we are going to solve the $1.2 trillion student loan crisis, students, families, and the institutions themselves need to treat higher education as an investment, and not a gamble.
