Today, plenty of major businesses and companies provide their own credit card that is branded with their name. It is a practice that is heavily utilized today; for instance, credit cards such as the Victoria’s Secret Angel Card or the Staples® Credit Card are prime examples. Credit cards such as these are no different than other credit cards in the sense that annual percentage rates, annual fees, and monthly payments all work the same way. In spite of that, there is a clear difference in the incentive for these credit cards from the perspective of both the consumer and business.

From the business or company point of view, these credit cards are basically meant to improve business and revenue. These credit cards often provide some benefits and exclusive access to customers, so they essentially drive people to spend money with the brand.

On the other hand, these cards can be fairly beneficial from the consumer perspective. If a customer knows he or she will be spending money with a company with or without the company credit card, then there is definitely a positive incentive to signing up for a store or company branded card. The main incentive being the credit card benefits which can go a long way with continued patronage at one store.

Airlines are no exception to this rule; in fact, airline credit cards offer some of the best benefits of any branded credit card on the market. Since recurring airline customers are guaranteed to spend thousands on air travel, it makes perfect sense to pick up a branded airline credit card and build up benefits with that airline company.

With that being said, there are plenty of airlines in the world, so there are plenty of airline credit cards to choose from. Here is a list of the best airline credit cards this year.

The Platinum version comes with much more compared to its Gold counterpart, but both cards come with some serious rewards and introductory bonuses. Platinum members can earn up to 35,000 bonus miles and 5,000 Medallion Qualification Miles (MQM) for spending at least $1,000 during the first three months of opening an account. Both Platinum and Gold Delta SkyMiles® card holders earn two miles for every dollar spent on Delta Airlines purchases. One mile is awarded for every dollar spent on normal purchases.

The only difference in rates and fees between the Gold and Platinum Delta credit cards is the annual fee. Platinum card holders can expect to fork over $195 annually. Gold account members get the first year for free, but they are expected to pay a $95 annual fee afterwards. Both cards charge $5 or 3% for balance transfers and cash advances, but there are no foreign transaction fees for either card. Late or returned payments warrant a maximum $37 fee for both cards.

The annual percentage rates (APR) for both cards are the same. Regular APR is variable and resides with a range of 15.99% to 24.99%. This range is the same for balance transfer APR. Cash advance APR is 25.49% while penalty APR is 29.49%.

Consumers looking to build credit with Untied and Chase can decide between two premier credit cards: the United MileagePlus® Club Card or the United MileagePlus® Explorer Card. The benefits of these cards differ slight which is evident in their titles.

In terms of introductory bonuses, the Untied Explorer Card has more to offer, but the United Club Card gives more of an annual bonus to its card holders. United Explorer card holders receive 30,000 bonus miles for spending at least $1,000 during the first three months with the card. In contrast, United Club card holders can look forward to a $100 credit for their first purchase. The real attraction is the United Club membership, a yearly $550 value, which Club card holders have annual access to.

Both card holders benefit from a $100 credit toward bag checking fees which is valid for roundtrip flights with United Airlines. United Club and Explorer card holders benefit from priority boarding at United. The United Explorer and Club Cards are both good travel credit cards with different focuses. The Club Card is all about VIP access to United Airlines’ club and lounge, and the Explorer Card is geared towards the habitual flyer looking for a return on expense. They both have their perks, so it is up to the future card holder to make a decision between the two.

Fees: $99 annual fee, $10 or 5% on balance transfers, $37 late payment fee, no foreign transaction

Asiana Airlines is based out of South Korea’s capital city, Seoul, and it teamed up with a big company, Bank of America, to find a way to reward its returning customers for their patronage. How did they do that? They created the Asiana Visa Signature® Credit Card which takes its place as one of the top credit cards in the airline card industry.

The Asiana Visa Signature® Credit Card comes with solid bonus rewards, and many of them recur annually as opposed to an introductory deal. The introductory bonus offer involves 30,000 Asiana miles, essentially points, for spending at least $3,000 during the first ninety days with the credit card. These points are redeemable for cash back value as well as airline tickets with Asiana.

On top of this, every year there are renewed benefits to look forward to. 10,000 bonus miles are awarded each year for simply holding on to the card. On top of this, a $100 rebate on Asiana Airline ticket purchases is available every year. To top it all off, Asiana awards two Asiana lounge passes to card holders annually; these give access to an exclusive lounge for Asiana customers.

Several standard reward benefits are applicable towards purchases made by card holders every day. When spending on Asiana Airline purchases, card holders earn three miles for every dollar spent. When making a purchase at a gas station or grocery store, two miles are awarded for each dollar spent in the transaction. Finally, one mile is accrued for every dollar spent on regular, day-to-day purchases.

The Asiana Visa Signature® Credit Card comes with a $99 fee that must be paid each year. Several transaction fees are applicable. Balance transfers cost either $10 or 3% of the transaction, and cash advances cost either $10 or 3% of the transaction as well. The maximum late fee is $37. Despite these fees, there is no foreign transaction fee with this credit card since it is used internationally.

Multiple different transaction types are also accompanied by an annual percentage rate (APR). Regular purchases and balance transfers could have an applicable APR of 12.49% to 19.49%. Cash advances are a bit costlier; for instance, the APR for these transactions ranges between 15.49% and 22.49% (25.24% for bank cash advances). The penalty APR is 29.99%.

Like any of the cards on this list, this credit card is most worth it to consistent customers of Asiana Airlines. In terms of actual benefits, the Asiana Visa Signature® Card is slightly above average since it offers annual perks such as lounge access and ticket rebates.

Virgin Atlantic Black Credit Card

APR: 12.49% - 19.49%

Rewards: 3 miles/$ spent at Virgin Atlantic, 1.5 miles/$ spent on all purchases

Bonus Rewards: 20,000 miles for first purchase, 15,000 miles for spending $25,000 annually, 5,000 miles for adding authorized card holder

Fees: $90 annual fee, $10 or 3% on balance transfers, $37 late payment fee, no foreign transaction fee

Virgin Atlantic is an airline that was started in the United Kingdom back in the 1980s; now it is an international airline that covers trans-Atlantic and European flights. Since it is such a large airline, it is only natural that it provides its own credit card (with Bank of America) which is technically dubbed as the Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard®. Despite this fancy title, the credit card is more commonly known as the Virgin Atlantic Credit Card.

There is an introductory bonus of 20,000 miles that gets credited to a user’s account. While this sounds like a much smaller bonus than other credit card offers, it is actually fairly comparable. The reason for this is because this intro bonus is awarded for simply making the first purchase with the Black Credit Card.

There are other bonus offers with the Black Card. An annual bonus of 15,000 miles is awarded for spending at least $25,000 each year. On top of that, card holders get 5,000 miles to their account for simply adding an authorized additional card holder. There are opportunities to gain status with Virgin Atlantic; for instance, tier points are awarded per $2,500 in purchases as well as for flying with Virgin Atlantic. More tier points essentially mean better benefits.

Two different standard reward rates accompany the Virgin Black Card. When buying tickets or spending in general at Virgin Atlantic, card holders earn three miles for every dollar spent. All other purchases accrue miles at a 1.5 to dollar spent ratio.

Many standard fees are present with this card offer; for instance, there is a $90 annual fee. Balance transfer transactions warrant a fee of either $10 or 3% depending on which value is great. Cash advance transactions receive the same fee. Late payments receive a late fee of $37. Despite all this, there is no foreign transaction fee with the card.

The annual percentage rates are fairly standard with possible rates on the low end of the spectrum. Regular purchases and balance transfers come with a minimum APR of 12.49% and a maximum 19.49%. The cash advance APR falls between 15.49% and 22.49%, but bank cash advances come with an APR of 25.24%. The penalty APR is 29.99%.

Sounding like a true broken record, Virgin Atlantic customers who constantly fly with their airline benefit the most from picking up the Virgin Atlantic Black Card. The benefits are decent, and card holders can obtain exclusive access to some cool features with the airline. Overall, it gets the stamp of approval.

Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® Credit Card

APR: 12.49% - 19.49%

Rewards: 3 miles/$ spent at Alaska Airlines, 1 mile/$ spent on regular purchases

Bonus Rewards: 30,000 miles and $121 companion ticket credit for spending $1,000 in first 90 days

Fees: $75 annual fee, $10 or 5% on balance transfers, $37 late payment fee, no foreign transaction fee

Alaska Airlines found its beginning by specializing in Alaska to contiguous United States flights; now it is one of the top airlines in terms of customer service and provides international flights. Being well known for its customer service, it is no surprise that the airline offers a credit card, the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® Credit Card.

There are multiple benefits to look forward to upon approval of the Alaska Airlines Credit Card. When new card holders spend just $1,000 during the first ninety days, they are eligible for 30,000 bonus miles. In addition to this mile credit, card holders receive another credit towards a companion’s ticket that is valued at $121. One extra benefit to look forward to is the free bag checks that come with the credit card; in fact, there are free bag checks for the card holder and up to six companions.

Two different spending rates of return are available for the Alaska Airlines credit card. Card holders accrue three miles for every dollar spent at Alaska Airlines, and one point per dollar spent is earned for simply spending with the card in general.

The Visa Signature® Credit Card comes with a $75 annual fee; less qualified applicants can get the Platinum Plus® Credit Card for $50 annually. Balance transfers are charged a fee of $10 or 5% depending on which is a greater value, and cash advances are under the same stipulations. There is a maximum $37 fee for making a payment late. There is no foreign transaction fee.

The Alaska Airlines Card is subject to standard Bank of America APRs. Balance transfers and regular purchases are subject to an APR range of 12.49% to 19.49%. Cash advances are burdened by a slightly higher APR range of 15.49% to 22.49%. Penalty APR is set at 29.99%.

Overall, the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® Credit Card is a solid deal for Alaska Airline customers in need of benefits, and the card certainly does not lack the any industry standards when it comes to that department.

SKYPASS Visa® Secured Credit Card

APR: 16.49%

Rewards: 1 mile/$ on regular purchases

Bonus Rewards: 5,000 bonus points for making first purchase, 1,000 miles for paying annual fee

Fees: $50 annual fee, initial security deposit, 3% or $5 on balance transfers, $37 late payment fee, 2% on foreign transactions

Despite the title, "SKYPASS," this credit card is offered by Korean Air and finds it place on this list as the second Korean airline credit card and first secured credit card. The SKYPASS Visa® Secured Credit Card from US Bank is an OK option for Korean Air customers, but it is a great deal for those with bad credit.

Since it is a secured credit card, the SKYPASS Secured Card offers limited benefits, but they are favorable compared to other secured credit cards. When SKYPASS holders use their credit card for the first time, they earn 5,000 bonus miles. When card holders pay the annual fee, they receive 1,000 miles. For the first year, that is a total of only 6,000 miles, but this is better than plenty of secured cards.

When making regular purchases, card holders accrue one mile for every dollar spent. This is the only rate available to these Korean Air secured card holders, but there are some other perks to include. SKYPASS card holders are eligible for up to $250,000 in travel accident insurance which is a solid perk.

In order to qualify for the SKYPASS card, applicants must send in a deposit which defines their credit limit. On top of this initial expense, a $50 annual fee is required. Balance transfers are subject to a fee of either 3% or $5, and cash advances are subject to a fee of either 4% or $5. Foreign transactions are taxed a fee of 2% on U.S. Currency or 3% on foreign currency. Late payments are charged a maximum fee of $37.

There are several APRs for transactions to keep in mind. The regular purchase and balance transfers APRs are set at 16.49%, and these rates are variable. Cash advances have a slightly higher APR of 20.99%.

While the SKYPASS Secured Credit Card lacks considerably benefits compared to every other card on the list, it is a solid deal for anyone with terrible credit. This is purely due to the fact that there are some benefits instead of absolutely none.
