Counselors Corner, by Jeffery Scranton

I love the warmer weather and the sunshine. Summer is quickly coming and before we know it, the school year will be over. Many students in high school are studying hard for AP exams and thinking about what courses to take next year. I want all our students to finish this year well and be prepared for next year.

You can help! Be engaged with your child and let him or her know you support them. The next couple of weeks your high school child (including current 8th grade students) will be discussing what classes to take next year. Colleges and Universities want to see applicants take advantage of what their school offers. TIS is an Advanced Placement (AP) school and if your child wants to go to a top university he or she will have to take some AP courses.

Talk to your child about making wise choices when they choose AP courses. TIS currently offers 10 AP courses and the list of courses for next year will be released shortly. It is important for students to demonstrate competence across different disciplines. Most universities recommend (many require) students to take math/science, English/humanities, and another of their choice other than the ones listed. This helps universities see that your child has started to develop critical thinking skills and has been exposed to different disciplines.

Visits to the Nurses Clinic - Phone Call Policy

In order to further open up communication between home and school we have put a new policy in place this year. After a child visits the Nurses Clinic, the Elementary Secretary, Mrs. Xu, or a liaison will contact you to let you know the nature of your child’s visit and the recommended next steps by the nurse. As we know you know your child’s needs best we want to include you in the conversation, allowing you to make the necessary decisions to best meet your child’s needs. If you have any questions in regards to this policy, please contact Miss Mansell at kmansell@tiseagles.com.

On-line Courses - Summer, 2015

High school students desiring to take on-line courses during the summer of 2015 (and earn TIS high school credit) should speak with Mr. Scranton, the Guidance Counselor, before May 8th.  These courses are not designed to "get ahead" in a subject, but are used for transfer students to "catch up" and to resolve scheduling impossibilities. Students who take on-line courses need to meet academic criteria, have permission from the principal, and pay for the classes on their own.  On-line classes demand a great deal of self-discipline and inner motivation, and should not be attempted without a strategic plan.
