PTO Kick-Off Meeting

On Wednesday around 60 parents were present for the PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) Kick Off Meeting at TIS.  During the 1-hour session, the basic organizational structure, the roles, and functions of the PTO was introduced to parents.  To many, the concept of the PTO is entirely new and some did not know how it differs from the PAC (Principals’ Advisory Committee).   After Wednesday's kick off session, many parents have come to understand what the PTO is all about and how important it is for parents to have such an organization in place.

The PTO is opened for all parents to participate in, following his or her own interest, time and commitment level.  At Wednesday’s meeting many parents showed interest and signed up for various roles and activities.  We are yet to decide on the individuals to run the various leadership roles and hence would like parents to come forward and offer their time and willingness to help activate this vital organization.   With many to help, we can do it.  Some roles and functions discussed included forming a Health and Safety Committee (covering Kitchen and Cafeteria, Bussing and other).  Topics yet to be discussed include promoting athletic events, performing arts events, and other important school-wide events like International Day and China Day.  PTO meetings will be held once a month.  Please be watching the Eagles Nest for the next PTO meeting.

How to Tell if Your Child is Being Bullied and What to Do About It

Written by Annie Suen, Elementary School Counselor, Tianjin International School.

Millions of children are being bullied everyday at school, and yet it’s often difficult for parents to recognize the problems. It’s important to take bullying seriously and not just brush it off as something that kids have to “tough out.” The effects of bullying can be very serious and can lead to a long term mental problems like anxiety and depression.

Children won’t always speak up when they’re being bullied at school, so parents need to look for warning signs.

Here are possible warnings that a child may be bullied and needs your support.

Unexplained physical marks, cuts, bruises, etc.

Frequently arriving home with clothing or possessions damaged or missing.

Doesn’t want to go to school or skip school.

Afraid of riding the school bus.

Appears sad, angry, anxious or depressed/change in typical behavior or personality.

Physical complaints: headaches, stomachaches, frequent visit to the nurse’s office.

Difficulty sleeping, nightmares, bed-wetting.

Change in eating habits.

Begin bullying siblings or younger kids (bullied children can flip their role and become the bully)

Waiting to get home to use the bathroom (school bathrooms can be hot spots for bullying because they are not adult-supervised.)

Suddenly has fewer friends or doesn’t want to be with the “regular group.”

Sudden and significant drop in grades (bullying can cause a child to have difficulty focusing and concentrating)

Dramatic change in style of dressing

Sudden fear of meeting new people, trying new things.

Talks about feeling helpless or about suicide.

If your child shows any of these signs, consider them clues for further inquiry. The problem may be bullying, or it may be something else.

If you do suspect a problem, talk with your child directly.

Here are some questions you can ask your child.

Who do you sit with at lunch and on the bus?

Your jacket is ripped. Did someone do that to you?

Do you have any special friends at school this year? Who are they?

Are there any kids at school who tease you in a mean way?

Are there any kids at school who leave you out on purpose?

If you do determine that your child is a victim of bullies, here are some tips.

Listen to your child. Take all complaints seriously, and listen supportively. Your child needs to know that he’s being heard and that his feelings matter.

Contact the school. Report it to the principal, giving as much specified detail as you can.

Contact the parents of the child whom your child identifies as a bully.

Encourage your child to take action. Teach your child to address the bully in a self-assured controlled manner. Role-play with your child assertiveness skills such as walking with confidence, looking someone in the eye, and saying authoritatively, “stop that right now.”

Bullying is preventable by educating themselves and their children. Parents can work with their schools and community to help prevent bullying behaviors in school. Be sure to talk to your child regularly, encourage them to be proactive when it comes to bullies.
