General Announcements

From the Head Principal's Desk

Parents are needed to join the PAC and the PTO. Mr. Belcher is inviting parents to volunteer to serve on the Parent Advisory Committee and/or the Parent Teacher Organization.

Parent Teacher Organization (PTO)

The PTO is parent-led and provides energy and ideas for enriching the social and academic opportunities available to students, staff, and their families. The PTO sponsors a wide variety of programs and events at the school, and occasionally is involved in planning fundraising for college scholarships, innovative programs, etc.

Volunteers to serve on the PTO are encouraged to express interest and submit their names to Willemien Horjus, whorjus@tiseagles.com.

Parent Advisory Committee to the Head Principal (PAC)

Purpose

The Parent Advisory Committee to the Head Principal is comprised of 12 parents. They meet with the Head Principal and other school staff on a monthly basis during the school year. Members work together to:

identify common needs and goals among the parents of students enrolled in TIS and facilitate strategies to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of TIS’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO).

provide the Head Principal with feedback and insight from the parent’s perspective on school process, policies and initiatives to ensure that the needs of parents and their families are included as decisions are made in the school.

bring to the Head Principal’s attention existing and emerging issues expressed by parents at the school.

serve as an advisory, not a decision-making body, that makes recommendations, encourages brainstorming and provides opportunities for parent involvement.

facilitate communication between and among all parents at TIS, taking into account the diversity of ethnicities, languages, and student grade levels of our parents.

Basis for Establishment

The PAC is comprised of parents from each division of the school (ECC, Elementary, Middle, High) and should represent the diversity of the school. They meet with the Head Principal and other school staff on a monthly basis during the school year to discuss a variety of topics, share information and broaden understanding of school-related issues. The PAC will assist the Head Principal in identifying the educational needs of students, adopting educational goals for the school, and helping to develop the annual School Improvement Plan.

Volunteers to serve on the PAC are encouraged to express interest and submit their names to Trancy Li, the Head Principal’s assistant, tli@tiseagles.com

Parents may be recruited to serve.

Meeting Information

All meetings for the PAC will occur from 9:30 to 11:30 AM.  The first two meetings will be held on October 16 and November 13 (Thursdays).

From the TIS Health Clinic

TIS currently has a number of cases of flu among staff and students. If your child has fever 37.5C/99.5F or above, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea we ask that you keep your child at home. Students may return to school AFTER they have been free of these symptoms for 24 hours. Thank you for helping control the spread of flu.

Think Pink - Cancer Awareness

During the month of October, we’d like you to:

Think Pink!

October is the official Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with each year being pinker than the last. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is all about increasing the awareness of the importance of early breast cancer detection.

The National Breast Cancer Awareness (NBCAM) program was founded in 1985 by Zeneca. Set up as a weeklong campaign aimed at promoting mammography as the most effective weapon in the fight against breast cancer. The NBCAM has now grown to an international phenomenon, with events and activities each October which increase awareness, and raise funds at the same time.

Come support each of these events to help us serve our community:

October 15th Think Pink Day - Wear pink!  Suggested donation 10rmb each... students, teachers, and parents are welcome to place donations in our Think Pink boxes around the school

October 17th Pink Lemonade Stand and Auction - Come, cool your thirst and make a contribution at our Pink lemonade stand, while participating in Uncle Sam’s auction

Coping Mechanisms

We all use them so is there anything wrong with them? If used in healthy ways coping mechanisms are great and necessary. Problems arise when we use them in unhealthy ways. There are coping mechanisms that are generally healthy and ones that are not. Coping mechanisms that are generally healthy are adaptive, cognitive and behavioral. Cognitive and behavioral can also be unhealthy and I will discuss tham next week.

Adaptive mechanisms are positive in nature. We cope with difficulties in various ways, many of them negative and uncomfortable as we try to repel or hide from uncomfortable feelings. The list below represents different things a person can do to reduce the tension and stress of life in positive non-destructive ways.

Compartmentalization: separating conflicting thoughts into separated compartments.

Compensation: Over-doing one thing to compensate for another weakness.

Crying: Tears of release and seeking comfort.

Displacement: shifting of intended action to a safer target.

Idealization: playing up the good points and ignoring limitations of things desired.

Identification: copying others to take on their characteristics.

Intellectualization: avoiding emotion by focusing on facts and logic.

Performing Rituals: Rituals are pre-defined sequences of activity. These rituals can be small physical actions, long scripts of speech or more complex combinations of behavior.

Post-traumatic growth: Using the energy of trauma for good.

Sublimation: Takes the energy of something that is potentially harmful and turns it to doing something good and useful.

Substitution: Replacing bad things with good things.

Undoing: Actions that psychologically 'undo' wrongdoings for the wrongdoer.

Next issue I will introduce some coping mechanisms that are positive but when misused or over used can be negative. Remember that preventative care is often the best care and makes the most impact. Learning to recognize patterns of thought or behavior that cause us trouble is an early step a person can take to prevent bigger problems from occurring.
