ISQ Superhero Day

ECC Lighthouse Update

Last week the Bright Start ECC celebrated Super Hero House Day! The students dressed up to show some of their inner Super Hero. We have many everyday heroes at Bright Start: people that help others, keep our classrooms safe and show kindness. We are thankful for the many students and adults that create a safe and fun learning environment.

Next week there will be no school in honor of October National Holiday. This is a great time to spend as a family reading, playing together and getting lots of rest. Cooking or preparing food together can also be a fun experience for your child. Exploring new textures and tastes can help them to learn more about their world. We look forward to seeing you again on Monday, October 6th.

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS

Dear Parents

I believe Middle School is the time for students to explore and be part of different things. It is a time for them to try things out, to discover their interests and likes so they can make better choices in High School and ultimately, wiser career decisions in the future. At ISQ we seek to give them those opportunities and I am pleased to tell you that we have another after school activity beginning soon… Kids Read! Mrs Middleton is heading this up and she has some things to say.

KIDS READ by Mrs Janice Middleton

I am excited to announce that KidsRead is back at ISQ! KidsRead is a book club for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students who love reading or wish to develop a love of reading. I am thrilled to lead the KidsRead team this year. I believe that reading is the key to lifelong learning; therefore, the love of reading is priceless! As a reading enthusiast myself, I am looking forward to sharing my passion for reading with the KidsRead participants.

Starting on October 6, KidsRead book club meetings will be held every Monday after school from 3:10 to 3:50p.m. Is your child on a middle school soccer team? No worries! Coach Barron has agreed to allow players to miss the first half of soccer practice in order to participate in the KidsRead Monday meetings.

During the KidsRead book club meetings, students will talk about the books they are currently reading, share book recommendations, and explore different reading genres. KidsRead is a wonderful opportunity for students to come together and have fun with books while building friendships!

KidsRead will also help to prepare students for reading competitions such as Battle of the Books (BOB). Moreover, 7th and 8th grade participants who prove their commitment to the KidsRead team may be invited to compete in the ACAMIS KidsRead competition that will be held in Nanjing on January 30, 2015.

A letter was sent home with students on Wednesday, September 24 with more information about the KidsRead program and a parent permission slip for those students who wish to join the program. The parent permission slip should be turned in to me, Mrs. Middleton, by the end of Friday 26 September. If you have missed today’s due late, it is not too late for your child to join the program! Please contact me, and we can make arrangements for your child to turn in the permission slip when we return from fall break.

If you have any questions or concerns about the KidsRead program, or if you would like to become involved as a parent volunteer, you may contact me by email (jmiddleton@teachers.isqchina.com).

Happy reading!

FALL TRIPS

Staff and students are very looking forward with excitement to the upcoming Fall Trips. 6th graders will be exploring more of Qingdao while 7th graders get to explore Shandong province. 8th graders will face the challenge of the ropes course in Tianjin. Staff will be doing a First Aid Training on Monday 6 October for these trips.

Letter should have been sent home. Please ensure to read them carefully and sign the permission slip as soon as you can. Also ensure that your health forms are submitted to the school and passports and visas are up to date.

MS SPORTS

This semester, Middle School students are participating in soccer. Weekly practices for boys are held on Mondays and Thursdays after school, and weekly practices for girls on Wednesdays and Fridays after school. This will continue through to around early November. On 7 – 8 November, our 7th and 8th graders get to travel to Tianjin to participate in the ISC Soccer Tournament.

Again thank you for your support to the school and ISQ community. I wish you and your family a restful and fun-filled National Week Holiday and look forward to seeing your child return refreshed on Monday 6 October!

Grade Specific Parent Meeting

For all the High School Parents:

Mr. Dentel and Mr. Logsdon will be asking all available parents to attend “Grade Specific Parent Meetings” to help parents be better informed about the ISQ expectations for each grade level. These meetings will cover a broad range of information including, grade specific course selection, graduation credits, SAT exams, AP courses and exams, and preparing for college and beyond. These meetings will be held in the library on main campus beginning at 10am. Please note below the date for each of the specific grade level meetings. Thank you in advance for taking the time to attend these meetings in order to be better informed as an ISQ parent.

October 8th----Grade 9

October SAT

Saturday October 11th will be the first of four SAT exams that will be offered this year at ISQ.

Please remember that you must bring your admission ticket and a second form of I.D. (passport or student I.D. card) in order to be admitted to the exam.

The other three opportunities to take the SAT at ISQ will be November 8th, May 2nd and June 6th.

January SAT Exam

To All High School Parents,

Beginning this year we will be offering the SAT Exam for the month of January. We realize that this will be a very good option for our students as they will have time to prepare for the exam during our Christmas Holiday. This year the exam date is Saturday, January the 24th. Please keep in mind that in the future there may be a conflict with the January exam date if it falls at the same time as the Spring Festival Vacation (Chinese New Year). At the beginning of each school year we will post a notice in the Lighthouse News as to the schedule for SAT Exams for the year. The application deadline for the 2015 January SAT will be December 8th.
