Are you excited to visit land of the paradise ? Or are you already in Sri Lanka and looking for things to do. Out of all the exciting places you must visit during your trip, ephemeral capital Yapahuwa, is one  of the place you must not missed.

In the year 1272, King Bhuvenakabahu made Yapahuwa as the capital of the country.  Yapahuwa kingdom is situated  in the Wayamba province of Sri Lanka in between between Kurunagala and Anuradhapura which were also ephemeral capitals in Sri Lanka.  It was built around a huge granite rock rising abruptly almost a hundred meters above the surrounding lowlands. During the time Sacred Tooth Relic was kept in a temple build inside the kingdom. Following the death of the King Bhuvenakabahu, Yapahuwa was largely abandoned and inhabited by Buddhist monks. Today you can see the remains of the beautiful ornamental stairway with two giant statues of lions by the sides, remains of a stupa, a Bodhi tree enclosure, and a rock cave used by Buddhist monks on top of the rock.

Two states of Chinese style lions sit by the sides of the stone stairway to the top of the rock about 90 meter high which has the style of the Sigiriya rock fortress  .

Remains of the “Stupa” on top of the rock.
