Can You Really Tell When Your Kids Are Telling The Truth?

Many parents have been there; having a freshly made mess, or having had a little too much candy – they have probably caught their kids in a lie. Being a parent, you would think that you would be able to detect all the lies that your kids create. Or at least, you would think so. However, this is actually not the case as an article published on sciencemag.org points out; adults have been shown to only correctly identify a lie told by a kid only 47 percent of the time. While this may be shocking news, it really isn’t too hard to see how this would be the case. As kids get older, the more they grow, develop, learn, and unfortunately also become more proficient liars. As the article goes on to describe, people who work with children are more adept at finding lies as they are told, but generally detecting these lies is a mostly 50/50 chance.

So What Can You Do About It?

Unfortunately, not much. Aside from teaching children that telling lies is a bad thing and that should be avoided, many kids will still continue to find themselves in the middle of a lie. You can punish and discipline a child for catching them telling a lie, but ultimately most all children do this to avoid getting into trouble or to sneak an extra bit of candy. While this isn’t the end of the world, it can be a very bad habit and lying can interfere with studying and even doing schoolwork. If this is the case, you may want to check out Kidtrol’s child lock app for their phones. It blocks all third party apps and the internet, so you know for sure that your kid isn’t fibbing about school. We at Kidtrol have your back, and as fellow parents we understand the struggle!
